HI,  late sunday night i got a knock on my door from my neighbor. She tells me she has something to show me, i follow her outside to my boyfriend who had been talking with our neighbors outside, he's in a chair with an adorable cat sleeping on his lap. Appaprently she just wouldn't leave him alone, even after trying to shoo her she just wouldnt leave him. She was extremly friendly, and would let us pet her right away. Not sure what to do, i went to go get a sweater so i could stay outside for a bit, silly cat followed me to my door, and well she's been staying with us ever since.

She was very hungry, and appeared small and a bit skinny. She also has been biting herself alot. She has a vet appointment tomorrow. But  my question is how do i know if she is stray or not?

We have grown very fond of her over the past few days, she loves to sleep on our coffee table, or on my lap and also like to cuddle and nuzzle my head and neck. I want to keep so much.

Thanks :)

P.S she is my profile picture

Hi alayna, cute kitty, she looks like Bootsie, my feral little mommy girl that I've been caring for. Sounds like that loveable little girl was someones kitty. It is hard to say whether she was some how separated from her family and they are missing her, or she could have been abandon. You could always inquire with your local SPCA and Humane Society and find out if anyone has lost a cat. Check your local craigslist and you can check your local papers classifieds, on the computer.

In the mean time love and care for her. It sounds like she has has already adopted you.

You can also ask the vet to scan for a microchip. It does sound like she was someone's pet not too long ago. She's way too friendly for a feral. Impossible to know if she's lost or was dumped. I would check for microchip and lost ads, but if nothing, I think you should feel great about keeping her. That's how I ended up with my cat. I'm pretty sure she was abandoned.

i was afraid i would get that answer :(

going to the vet tomorrow, because we believe she has fleas really badly. i will get them to scan her. although when we first found her, the next day i call the local humane society inquiring about a cheap check up for her, and they were quite rude and informed me that they did not have a vet on staff....  was unsure if she was someones pet beacuase shes quite skinny and bites herself constantly. she also eats alot, everytime there is aloud noise instead of hiding, she runs to her food and eats.

oh well i guess i will just have to see

Agree with the others, astray or dumped, definitely no semiferal, as she is so very eager to please herself in.    :)

Yes, try to find her owners. If she is dumped, they wont admit. But if she got astray, they are searching after her and missing her.

Have her in ONE place in your home, to not get everything infested by these fleas...

If you have other animals, dont let them meet each other as yet, by roughly the same reason.

Wait to she gets OK from the vet, and the deworming/deparasiting is done in full.

If you can get Capstar today you can give her one pill now, it kills off the adult fleas living on her at this moment immediately. Tomorrow  the vet will give you something more long term deparasiting...

You yourself shall not experiment with defleasers you dont know for sure are OK. Google at least.  :)

Good luck!

She may be biting herself because of the fleas or nervousness. Capstan will work on the fleas, at least initially. She's apparently been through a lot and even though you're being so kind to her, she's probably still nervous. Good luck with the vet!

UPDATE

Thanks to everyone for their replies, much appreicated. Turns out she is not microchipped, nor have we been able to find an owner. So we have decided to keep her

She did have fleas and probably worms, but the fleas aren't too bad turns out shes super allergic to the fleas and just has a very bad reaction. Shes doing well, and has become a wonderful addition to our household. Again thanks to everyone for thier replies and support
