Hi guys,

I'm getting a kitten that is about 1 month old. He was abandoned by his mother and the girl that rescued him has been feeding him kitten formula for a few weeks. She just started to wean him off the formula and he's been eating Wellness Core kitten canned food for a few days now.

How soon should I attempt to introduce him to hard/solid kitten food? I was thinking of keeping him on the same line of food since I like that it has all the nutrients kittens need. I don't want to introduce him too soon to solids just yet though.

Also, how much should he be eating of canned food? She told me that she keeps it out for him and his sibblings all the time so she doesn't really know how much they are eating.

Any advice you guys can give me? I've never had a kitten before, just an adult cat.

Canned food is better for cats anyway: www.catinfo.org

But if you do want to introduce some dry food eventually (it's hard to keep an older kitten satisfied!), wait until his teeth are all the way in, maybe about 10 weeks. You could introduce it earlier but moisten it a bit so it's not too hard.

Kittens should be fed all they can eat. At that age of course it won't be much, but make sure he eats at least 4 times a day, all he wants each time.
