Topaz is my first cat. I have had dogs most of my adult life and never really intended to get a cat at all. I was originally intending to adopt a dog at my local SPCA but I just went in to peak at the catswhile I was waiting to see the dogs. I spotted Topaz peeking out from his cage watching me. He was so cute. I asked if I could see him. it was love at first sight. He jumped up on my lap and started to purr. Tears welled up in my eyes and I felt a wave of love come over me that I had never felt before. The connection was made, and Topaz had a new home and I had a new cherished companion.
FYI Topaz is a small Tabby (about 5 pounds) and is two years old.
Topaz is a rescue cat and I feel that he was probably abused by his past owner. The first three weeks Topaz hid behind the couch only comming out at mealtimes. Any noise such as the closing of a door would send him trambling behind the couch again. But by being patient and loving it wasn't too long before Topaz was sitting on my lap on a regular basis. He was finally trusting me. We have bonded over the past few months and have in fact become best friends. Nothing gives me more pleasure than seeing him curled up beside me on the couch, or nestled on "his seat" at the breakfast table. (He knows that the human food is not for him!)
Topaz has destroyed my furniture. That is why I came to this forum, to weigh the many alternatives to solving this problem. I was headed in the wrong direction that was for sure! But now taking Topaz once a month to my vet to have soft claws applied seems like a good solution.
Topaz is a very finicky eater. He won't eat dry cat food. In fact he will only eat whiskes moist cat food, so that is what he gets.
So far I am enjoying the experience of owning a cat.
Owning a cat is nothing like owning a dog. It is a more intimate relationship and one where there is a true sense of equality between master and pet. I like that. He is independent yet respectful in a strage sort of way. And, the respect is absolutely mutual.
I am happy to have found this forum. I look forward to many years of happiness with my new friend, and I look forward also of sharing my experience with all of you and learning from your experiances too.
