pinkman here.

I was talking to my partner about treats and I was thinking maybe I'll try some niboshi dried sardines. Has anyone tried them? My cat loves crunchy treats such as Whole Life freeze-dried treats but I wanted to give her more options so she has some variety. I know fish shouldn't be a main part of a diet, but I think a small dried sardine once in a while won't kill her.

Niboshi are basically dehydrated whole sardines. I'm Japanese, and I used to have a ton of this stuff along with katsuobushi (bonito flakes) long ago when I was still living with my family. We use both niboshi and bonito flakes to make broth.

Does dehydrating a food decrease the amount of Omega-3's? Not that it matters so much because I'd feed these as a treat, but I'm just curious.

I'm thinking about purchasing some at my local Japanese grocer and see how she likes them. If not, I can always make soup.

As long as they are just dehydrated with little or no saly, I don't see a problem with using them as an occasional snack. I used dried anchovies as a topper sometimes.

A lot of raw feeders feed canned sardines (in spring water, no salt) or raw sardines once a week for Omega 3s. I'm not sure what the drying process does to Omega 3. That's a good question.

Yeah I'd look for ones with no salt. If I ever make broth with them I'd rather control saltiness on my own.

Canned sardines are unfortunately not a hit. I'm not sure if she doesn't like the texture or what. I haven't tried raw yet- Once I move I will be (hopefully) living near Brooklyn Chinatown, where I can find raw sardines.

Luckily my cat loves krill oil, and she gets her omega-3s from that.
