I feed my kitten bb wilderness as a snack and have not noticed any effects. I don't really want her eating dry food anyway but was worried about her not getting enough calories because I feed tiki cat and weruva to her and my older cat (plus I do give her raw twice a day). I am probably going to stop giving it to her after this bag and stuck to the ziwi peak freeze dried raw to leave out as a snack. I am now worried but there doesn't seem to be any exact evidence that there is something bad in it.

Wow I thought that BB wilderness was one of the best foods, I'm completely shocked by all these reports of renal failure. I do use it in rotation sometimes and they like it so much more than the Innova I bought a case of when it was on sale
. I guess it is no good to feed an expensive brand if they won't touch it.

I swear not one of the four will touch the Innova with a ten foot pole. Gotta love our picky finicky kitties.

I too have become alarmed at the renal failures of cats consuming Blue Buffalo. My cat eats BB kibble, but he also likes Nature's Variety kibble in the Limited Turkey Diet and his best NV kibble favorite, Chicken flavor. With these cat health reports concerning Blue Buffalo, right now I've been feeding my cat Nature's Variety to be on the safe side.

If anyone has an open bag of Blue--

With most stores I think you can return opened food if it has been purchased within the store's return policy period. Most of it should be unused. They do this to encourage trying out new products and purchasing at their store vs. one that does not accept such returns.

If you purchased the food from PetSmart, they will let you return the opened bag of food for store credit

Very strange...

Now that Poppy has been off the BB for a few days, I've noticed a change in her stool color. When on BB, it was very dark, even though I was feeding her the chicken flavor. Now that she's off BB, it has turned lighter. I thought the chicken flavors were supposed to yield lighter colored stool?

Here's their ingredient list from the can I fed her:

Chicken,Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Water, Dried Egg Whites, Potato Starch, Ground Brown Rice, Spinach, Flaxseed, Sodium Phosphate, Guar Gum, Carrots, Sweet Potatoes, Cranberries, Blueberries, Natural Flavor, Potassium Chloride, Iron Amino Acid Chelate, Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Sodium Selenite, Potassium Iodide, Salt, Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Niacin (Vitamin B3), d-Calcium Pantothenate (Vitamin B5), Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Biotin (Vitamin B7), Folic Acid (Vitamin B9), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Carrageenan, Taurine

I just realized, too, that I don't remember my food looking like their picture here:

http://bluebuffalo.com/cat-food/healthy-gourmet-flaked-chicken?pf=1&type=wet&animal=cat

The food that I got was darker. I am sure I fed her the chicken. I am working on rotating food and the only flavor I start off with when (re)introducing new brands is chicken.

Fighting for ferals in NW NJ!
I know you're not feeding BB any longer, but for anyone finding this thread that is:

I really don't know why anyone puts spinach in cat food. It can contribute to the formation of oxalates.

And here's info on cranberries. They also have no business being in a cat food: http://www.thecatsite.com/t/245844/cranberry#post_3220685

As to why it would make your kitty's stools darker... the carrots and sweet potato would make it a little more ... orange, but still light. Maybe the spinach, flax seed (because it doesn't say flax seed OIL), blueberries or brown rice? :dk: The only thing I actually think would make it darker is the spinach. But I really don't know.

Thanks for the spinach and cranberry tips. I just thought it odd that her poop was really dark when I've feed chicken formulas before and didn't get anything that dark. I suppose we'll never find out. Too bad I don't still have an open can. I would've loved to take a picture and compared it to the BB pic. Theirs looks like human food chicken salad. What I got was cat food, except shaped like tuna flakes.

"Which"-Blue-Buffalo-food-are-we-talking-about?

I-had-issues-with-Blue-Wilderness-wet-chicken-and-turkey,they-refused-to-eat-it,which-they-previous-loved-it.They-loved-the-turkey,then-BB-came-out-with-the-5.5-cans,they-refused-to-eat-that-from-the-start,but-would-eat-the-3.0-cans.Makes-no-sense,according-to-BB-its-the-exact-same-food.Then-they-started-to-refuse-the-3.0-cans.Then-I-found-what-looked-like-mold,in-the-3.0-cans-of-turkey.I-took-all-the-cans-back.

Now-I-just-feed-them-the-Blue-Wilderness-dry-chicken,and-mix-it-with-1-teaspoon-Gerber-chicken-baby-food,and-water,so-its-like-a-broth,to-keep-them-flushed-out.They-are-sched-fed,and-eat-it-all-up-in-about-10-min.They-run-thru-the-house-at-warp-speed-like-crazy-boys,-they-been-to-shows,-they-been-making-the-finals,they-pee-big-spots,they-poopie-normal.

Right-now,this-works-for-them.

I had the Blue Spa. I knew when I fed it about the grain, but right now I'm working with some constipation issues. Either the insoluble fiber in the grain or low fiber makes her more regular, and I intend to slowly take her off grain after I get a stabilized bowel movement pattern. Right now, though, after 3 months of constant worry over whether or not she's going to eat and poop and a vacation coming up, I'd rather feed her something with low glycemic grain--it seems to work and she isn't showing any allergies to it--and revisit the issue after vacation.

So I started freaking out after my last reply and just decided to stop feeding the BB kitten wilderness as a snack in between meals for my kitten. Interestingly, her feces is now a lighter brown and while she was eating BB kitten (chicken flavour ) it was almost black. I thought the colour was because she was easting raw food, but it seems to be from the BB, so I thought I should share this.

That is really interesting because I would describe the color of Poppy's stools while on BB as the same--almost black. Had me a little worried until I switched.

I feed shadow blue wilderness (dry food). I haven't noticed anything amiss but I will keep an eye.

I still feed mittens bb and I'm very happy with it and so is she. There was a time when she didn't eat much but right now she eats it fine (I think she was going through a face)

It is sounding like the wet food is the culprit? I have foster kittens and an outdoor cat who are all chowing down on it, plus I have my inside cats on the weight management. So far, no one's gotten sick (and before BB, one or all of my inside kitties threw up at least once a day). I will buy something else for the next round. I believe at this point, the only dry I haven't purchased is Welness. I am working on transitioning them all to all-wet but at 9, 8 and 7, they have not made it easy!
