My cat had kittens just yesterday morning around 9 am, and yet today one of the kittens already has its eye fully open. I always heard when I was younger that if a kittens eyes opened that early it meant that they were going to blind when they got older, is this true?

I have never been around kittens in which their eyes opened this early but the last litter I had just a month ago was 3 to 4 days old and their eyes were opening, the mothers are sisters and I was just curious if anyone knows what might have caused this?  Should I be thinking of a vet check as soon as I can or what is your opinions?

Wow I have never heard of a kitten opening their eyes so young. Even 3-4 days old is very early. Most don't even start until around a week old with the eyes fully opening between days 10-14.

That said, I don't know about a potential link to blindness. I don't know for sure but logic would dictate that the eye opening has more to do with the amount of stickiness left in the eye from being in the womb, and not from actual eye function (or lack thereof). Really, I have heard the opposite to be true- that it takes blind kittens a significant amount more time to open their eyes (because no light is coming in they have no incentive to keep moving the eye to stretch it open).

I can't really imagine a medical complication that would stem from the eyes opening so young (especially if they look clean and there is no signs of infection) but it would be best to call your vet and ask just to be on the safe side.

Please let us know what the vet says. I'm curious as to why they opened so prematurely!

Do you foster or was your last litter delivered by her or another resident cat? If it is your pet cat that is pregnant please remember that she can go back into heat at anytime after delivery so she must stay indoors and away from any intact males until after she is spayed. Also be mindful of cross illness issues if you still have the other litter in the house.

Best of luck and welcome to TCS!
