Wow! What a challenge...but "just put one foot in front of the other...as soon Lily will be walking up to too"! Hopefully you know the tune...and she may just allow you to walk up to her...or not. But she does probably know you care for her but loving her most likely looks like letting go of past regrets and just going at Lily's pace as she learns to gradually trust you.

I have somewhat of a similiar experience...I adopted a semi feral cat...her mother left her alone all day...for days at a time and even as a kitten didn't teach her that loving cuddles were a good thing. Just what for her to ask for attention when she would jump up on her in the evening. When a got her she would only let me touch her head. Ten years latter we cuddle but only in bed. But she has learned to trust...and love me, asked me for tuna treats...sits in her kitty spots near me in ever room and responds to my loving baby talk! The one positive i had tho...is that she was bonded to my young male kitty. They are best friends and she knows he is the Alpha kitty of sorts.

It's challenging to go at their pace but it will pay off! And you have a tremendous amount of support and worth while information...so be encourage my dear friend. art4life (a newbie too)
