Hi guys! I just got an adorable new cat and she is perfect, but I want to make sure I am feeding her right: everyday I feed her a combo of 2 dry foods she likes (1/2 of 3/4 cup in morning and half in evening) with her water, will probably just switch to the one once other one is used up, but she seems to really like it so I feed this to her Mon-Sat, then Sunday is her treat day as I give her a half can of wet cat food (either in morning or at nite) but try to in morning normally. So as not to waste the food and keep it good for her (at least that is what I thought I was doing
) I feed her half from the can, which I just keep in cupboard till I open, then I take the other half, leave in the opened can, but please this in a Tupperware container to seal it, then I leave this in fridge till the next Sunday and feed her the other half. But now I am reading if left in can is only good for 2-3 days and can grow bacteria!
...so maybe not such a treat after all. So from now on I will not leave in can in fridge so long, only done twice so far, so here are my questions:
  1. since I only feed her the wet canned food once a week, would it be ok to feed her the whole can (the small-sized cans is what I have) on that day and if so can I do in one serving or should I feed in the morning and evening, and just refrigerate it for that day till I feed to her again that nite, as I feel giving her the whole can in one serving might be too much
  2. if I do refrigerate it, is it safer to completely remove from can and just put in the Tupperware container?
Please let me know and thanks so much!

I would switch to feeding her wet food only or mostly wet food with just a 1/4 C or less of dry food.  Wet food is so much better for her.

There are many health benefits in wet food. It has more meat protein, a lot less carbs (which cats shouldn't eat anyway) and has the moisture cats need.

A great website on cat nutrition is www.catinfo.org. It's written by a vet and explains why cats shouldn't eat dry food.

Essentially, kibble is a species inappropriate food for cats.

dry food is hard on the kidneys especially if your cat doesn't drink a lot of water. wet food is better. glad your switching before health problems develop.

for better nutrition you might also try several brands of cat food and rotate them. helps prevent allergies and each brand may offer different nutritional values that way your cat gets the broadest range of nutritional elements. variety is the spice of life!
