My 3 month old beautiful pure white kitty, so smart really and so loving broke his neck or something and died right in front of me last Friday.  OMG....I have cried on and off all week.  My son who's 34 even cried, and I haven't seen him even shed a tear since he was 10, and his girlfriend sobbed, too.  It was horrible.

So, I have spent alot of time this week looking at kitties on different sites and learning more about kitty behavior, what to buy and making plans.  I will get another kitty within a couple months but am taking time to grieve now...

On to happier talk.  The cat I raised my son with was just a cat given to us by the Mexican babysitter, a 9 week old kitten from an outdoor cat her girlfriend had.  I didn't know cats at the time, but my son wanted a pet so I said ok.  Well, the Vet said he was an American Shorthair, I said OK thinking this just meant he was a c-a-t.  It wasn't for another 5-6 years that I actually realized he was a breed--LOL!

Anyway, he was the love of our lives, a member of the family like American Shorthairs are, a wonderful cat and lived to be 17-1/2 despite having cystitis 2X from foods off the shelf my son snuck to him (I could have killed that kid)..but I got him to be an old cat regardless.

And he was just a wonderful, wonderful boy of 14-1/2 lbs. and an orange tabby with--get this--seafoam colored eyes!

However, we did get compliments on his wonderful personality all the time.  We had a hardwood floor that was 25 feet across, and we would put him on a skateboard, he would stand on it like a surfer, my son would give it a push to me on the other side and Tiger would just stand the whole way and then when it got to me I would give it a push back across the floor to my son!

And his other trick was I could put him around the back of my neck like a stole, walk anywhere--like out in the yard--and he would just look around like no big deal!

This was a fantastic cat as you can tell.  My son left for his career up to Chicago, and 3 weeks later I let him out to pee and he never returned.  I just knew right away he went to hide and die.  My son, to this day, has never accepted that that was what happened for some reason.  I think my son considered the cat his brother and he would do human things and not cat things maybe.

So, that is me and my situation.  I am trying to figure out where to get the best kitty that's not a breed, and probably from someone who has a housecat that got out and gets pregnant by the neighborhood king Tom I guess.  Does that sound right?

My next choice is going to a Rescue adoption place.

My biggest fear from the Humane Society is I did adopt a darling fellow from Houston's Humane Society, and he died of FIP at a year...

not sure if I can handle another death of a beloved kitty again.

Any suggestions, fellow kitty lovers????

Hi there!

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's always heartbreaking when you lose a furry part of the family. It's so hard to say goodbye but in the end, the happiness and love that bring while they're with us makes it all worth it to be owned by a cat.

I am 100% certain that when the time is right, the perfect little kitty will find you and you'll open your heart and home to a new family member.

Boy, I sure hope so....I'm even getting tired of burning out the cat forums and studying the different types of cats, petfinder.com, azhumane.org looking for kittens even tho I'm waiting (just looking now), etc...LOL!  Talk about window shopping...geesh...  At least it's taking my mind off my last kitty.

And thank you for the kind thoughts!

I know that it might seem like an odd place to look but I found my kitten Artemis on Craigslist. A lot of people post on there to find a homes for kittens. Of course, it's a bit of a gamble in terms of their health ... but it's gamble no matter where the kitty comes from. Just another place to add to your search list. =)

Happy hunting!

Actually, there is someone with an article on the net (I think it's in Wikihow?) who says a Whoops kitty is best, and by that he means that you get the healthiest kitty when you have an indoor cat that gets out and mates with the king Tom of the neighborhood.  His seed is strong, mama kitty is healthy = good babies.  Made sense to me, so Craigslist is not a bad idea actually.  In fact, I bet that baby kitty would be alot healthier than one of the poor little strays the Humane Society gets often.

Have you checked out your local shelters too? They're always looking for homes for their kitties, and since it's kitten season, I am sure they'll appreciate a home too!

Not sure anyone will see this, but to get over the grief I found myself literally trolling all the shelter ads for cats everyday for many hours...weird but it worked.  I also signed up to work as a counselor at the Humane Society which should be a blast for me.  I have such an extensive business background that maybe they can use me in various areas...we shall see...but matching kitties/cats to new owners is my idea of a good time!

Still, I found 2 healthy kitties all white at a local shelter that will not let them home till they have all neuter/spaying done, all shots and microchipping--plus, they foster so these kitties are with their mommy till 10 weeks when I get them!  Perfect!!  Not all the kitties have their mommies, of course, but mine were just lucky.  The lady has 3 children and you can tell they have loved and been gentle with them.  One of her children is severely retarded but he was gentle, too, and very loving with the kitties.  I am very excited about this.

Of course, I still grieve over my beautiful/intelligent kitty who passed recently, but came to the conclusion that no amount of grieving and crying would bring him back; so, when I saw these 2--and you know how hard it is to find 2 all white kitties and these are exceptionally cute, too--I just grabbed at it even driving over an hour to sign-up, too.  I had to beat 14 others who wrote emails interested in the boy kitty but did it--even tho I came from clear across town kittycorner, my gps did not get me there and took me to the wrong place and my major highway was closed down due to repairs!  I did get my first speeding ticket in 15 years and waiting for the ticket to come to the house...but darn it!  I got the kitties!!!!!!!

They are...and I will work on learning to upload photos.  I'm the best on research...but simple things like uploading or sending attachments sometimes...just pathetic.  This is what happens when you are a senior and never have a computer class..sigh...

My son thinks it's too early to get another kitty, but I saw these and wanted them...and figured that no amount of tears will bring my baby back to me.  I will forever grieve over him dying, tho.

I was telling a guy I have known for ages just now about getting the kitties and beating out the 14 others interested in him by just getting there earlier...and some girl in her 20's who came in and declared she wanted the 2 kitties I got.  He laughed...he knows me...I'm old but I'm fast...LOL!  If these two turn out even a smidge as smart as my beloved kitty who just passed I will be thrilled...but I think these 2 are going to be more laid back and not so curious as my other kitty...and it was his curiosity that killed him (an old saying that has some truth in it, obviously).

Everyone grieves in their own way. When you're use to a house with a cat and then it's empty, that's a heartbreaking feeling. I think that your new babies will help a lot. I had a pet hedgehog for five years and he was a companion to my cat, Artemis. My hedgie recently died from cancer and the house just felt empty, you know? Artemis would sit on the table where the hedgie's cage used to sit and she'd just look so bummed out. They had been pals and I probably sound completely crazy but she seemed just as upset by his passing as I was. That was what prompted me to adopt my second cat, Winston. The house felt so empty and my little Artie Cat needed a companion. And Winston has helped so much! The house feels alive again. He's a great companion to Artie and he loves to snuggle with people so he's my own personal teddy bear. So I agree, no pet will ever replace your kitty but I think that these guys will keep you very busy and now you'll have two new bonds to form!

I appreciate your words.  My son just does not get it...but my beloved kitty who passed was really my cat totally so maybe that's why.  And he was so very smart:  he learned his name in like 2 days, would come when I said come then also and would follow me everywhere.  He loved lying right on the computer almost and watching the mouse move and even watched tv.  He was only 3 months...I mean..he was very, very, very special!  I've had 5-6 cats before and none of them could hold a candle to that one.

A gal who used to work for us had a ferret and grieved when it passed...guess it's the bond and not the animal form love comes in always.
