A friend of mine sent out a panicked email, saying she needed to rehome her two cats because her husband cannot live with his allergies any longer. I've offered to temporarily take them both in, and relying on our mutual circle of friend advertise them and rehome them permanently. My question is, should I try to rehome them as a set?

They aren't littermates, as far as I know, and I'd actually keep one, if I wasn't still hoping to find my missing kitty Zhu Zhu (gone for two months now). I'm not mentally ready to call the search off, although temporarily sheltering these other cats is okay with me. But I'm wondering if it is better for the cats to be adopted out as a pair...

If they are best buddies, yes!  If they are so so, not necessary and you can split them if so is.

another point. most cats do prefer to have a cat companion.  If they are going to a house with cats (or friendly dogs) it is easier to split them (if they are so so).  If they are going to be alone...  Better alone cat in a good home than homeless or in a shelter, but having a cat pal in a home is best..

Good luck!

I think the relationship the two cats have with each other should dictate whether or not they must be kept together or can be separated. Of course, if it's doable the cats should be kept together but it's very difficult to find someone to take in two cats so if they aren't very close I would place them separately. If they are very close and would hurt if separated I would work harder to find them a home as a pair.

I have two brothers who are extremely close. They are always together and don't socialize much with the other cats. Separating them would devastate them so that's not an option. Other cat pairs just live together though and would do just fine without the other.

If the cats are close i would try to home them as a pair even though they are not litter mates they still may love each other and want each others company.

I am still hoping for your Zhu Zhu to come home and I am so sorry about what you have been going through with that. :hugs: AND, wow, you are a great friend to take in these two cats. I agree with the others' that if the cats are bonded then try to keep them together BUT if you can keep one of them :hugs: then try to find another loving home for one kitty is easier than placing two. All my best to you in this situation. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:
