I've just had my cat for 5 months now. All's been well until lately I've been waking up with a runny nose and congestion. Also when the cat scratches me even without drawing blood, the skin reddens and the site of the scratch seems to be slightly elevated.

Am I developing cat allergies or is it just spring coming by? I really hope not because it would be devastating to give up the cat if allergies worsen (it does seem that way) and I can no longer care for him.

I'm pretty sure it's just Spring, if you weren't having issues before. It's normal for a scratch to get red and swell, allergy or no.

I'm actually very allergic to cats and live with 8 of them - and I let them sleep with me. So if you need tips on managing living with a kitty while allergic, just give a head's up. I have heaps of tips.

But given you weren't allergic when you adopted him, I highly suspect it's seasonal allergies. I developed them in my 30s, and they slowly got worse as I got older. My mom developed them in her 20s, and my sister developed them in her 40s.
