hi all, its one that didn't even pop into my head til I was just on youtube - what happens when they are first born do they just go anywhere or will mum help them (obvs they are not going to walk over to the litter tray and use that), feel really stupid asking but really don't know?

Mom helps they, her licking and caring stimulates them to pee and poo. Mom ates it up and continues to wash.  Small  Orphans must have help from their caretaker with the stimulation and washing off.

Your question is not stupid.  Many owners of moms, even breeders, has never seen a kitten poo. Mom ates it, so it is rarely seen.  Caretakers of orphans see them, but very few other people.

When they got older and begin eat food, time for littertraiinging.  If they have mom they usually catch it themselves doing as she does.  If orphans, you must train them yes.

Use non clumping litter!

Good luck!
