Ok I'm going to switch my 2 cats one I am estimating to be 2-5 years (Tabby) and the other is for sure alittle over a month old (Buddy). Buddy is eatting only wetfood and I want Tabby to eat only wet food. I am just wondering how much you guys spend on wet food for your cats if you do all wetfood diet.

Well, that of course depends on what brand you feed, the prices at the store you shop at, and how many cats you have :dk:. You don't want to know how much I spend on cat food! :lol3:

What brand(s) are you feeding them now? Do you want to expand the variety or stick with what they're on?

Well Tabby she doesn't care what type she eats as long as she gets food she doesn't seem to care for the dry food my mom got her so I am going to switch them to total wet. My mom got her friskies they used to eat pet pride and that is about 8-9 buck for a 24 pack

If it helps, I also have 2 cats.  I feed them fairly high quality food - wet in the morning and dry at night.  I used to do all wet, but when I added the 2nd cat it just was too expensive to keep them both on wet for both meals with the types I buy.

So, I think the average now is about $70 a month, give or take.  That's for 30 cans of 5.5 or 6 ounce wet which they split in the morning, and then they get 1/4 cup each of dry at night.  Sometimes, they get another 1/8 cup each as a snack if they have been really playing hard. The dry is a mixture of 2 brands, currently Wellness Grain Free Chicken and Orijen Chicken.  I think we're going through about a 1/2 a bag of each of those a month, so a bag total approximately?  The cans I get range from a low of $1.10 up towards $1.79 each if I remember right.  I get Hounds and Gatos, Before the Grain, Natural Balance, Instinct, and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul.

I will splurge sometimes on even better food - I bought a can of Instinct Venison to try them on this weekend, but just a small can to share.  I viewed it as a snack.  That alone, 3 oz. was over $1.  But they sure loved it.  Wish I could add that to the rotation more frequently.

I also supplement now and then with egg yolks, canned sardines (in water, no salt) and scraps of whatever I'm cooking that is ok for kitties.  But, I don't count that into the price.  Nor am I counting other supplements such as the krill oil which Casper gets (he's older).

Throw in a couple of bags of treats and I'm up to the $70.  That's substantially less than what I was spending at first, I think it was over $100.  I just couldn't manage that.  I'd like to get that down a bit lower but I just haven't found food which I feel good about giving them that costs less.

I want to know just so that I can do the math with what the prices are around here for a 12-24 pack of 5.5 oz cans

LOL :tongue2: :D.

Most fixed indoor adult cats of average size will need about 5-6 ounces of canned food a day of most brands (some brands are much lower in calories, but the most common brands are pretty much the same). Kittens and nursing mothers need a lot more calories. She'll be fixed soon, but he'll be a kitten for a long time yet, so it'll be hard to say exactly how much he'll need. He should be allowed to eat as much as he wants until he's at least 9-12 months old. It can be a lot---those teenage boys need their food! Some older kittens/young adults will need 10 ounces a day!

Friskies is usually about 50 cents for a 5.5-ounce can, $12 for a 24-pack. A 13.2-ounce can is usually about a dollar, so you're basically getting those extra 2 ounces for free. So if you can find the larger cans it might save you some money.

My boyfriend is the only one working and I'm on food stamps so I need more for my money and the cats are going to get fixed at about the same time. Buddy is eatting as much as he wants and will come running if he sees or hears a can of wet food being opened or if you stand next to where he eats even if he isn't hungery. He barley nurses anymore. By the time their appointment is set and the bill for it is payed (they want it done before the surgery) he should be funlly on wet food cause I only see him with his mom feeding about 1-2 times a day the rest is wet food. She moves when he tries to feed so I would say that its time to get her and him fixed cause he got weight on him and its about 2 pounds or at least 1 and will defanatly be 2 very soon the way that he eats. The kitten that the boys here found at their school (the mom got hit) is alil older than buddy and doesn't feel to weigh as much as him. I am probably going to go with the way that is whatever is on sale get them cause Tabby loves changing food.

So it would be about a can a day for each cat?

Hi tabbymommy... Cats do a lot better on an all wetfood diet..  It's the way to go...

As for how much, it really depends on the food.  And for that discussion, you'll get more answers over in Nutrition.  I'll ask a mod to swap you over

Yes, about 1 can a day of a 5.5 or 6 ounce can should be enough for each of them.

But, again, as Willowy mentioned.  Buddy is still growing right now and may need more than that temporarily.

You'll want to keep track for a while to make sure they aren't losing weight.  If you have a scale at home, all you have to do is weigh yourself, then weigh yourself holding one of the cats and take away the difference.  If you see either of them losing, they aren't getting enough food and you'll have to increase their intake.

Me I feed eithere pet pride or friskis or anything that is on sale but I'm probably going to stick with pet pride cause that is the cheapest bulk one. It is 5.5 oz. It is about 8.50 for a 24 pack of wet food
