Hi everyone! I have a 3 month old kitten that has soft stools. Took her to the vet and they did a stool test and checked her out and said there's nothing wrong with her. No worms. So this morning I woke up and there was blood at her bottom so I took another stool sample to the vet and he said she just has upset stomach possibly from shots. This was going on before and I just thought it was her change in food. I feel her Blue Wilderness. And I WAS giving her Wellness Core canned but stopped it in hopes of a firmer stool. I'm ASSUMING it might be food issues. Can someone help me out with this one?

It's possible that the food is too rich for her system.  She needs to be on a quality kitten food such as Royal Canin kitten, Wellness kitten (which produces VERY stinky poos), or something like Innova EVO cat & kitten (if you want high quality grain-free).  Also, at 3 mos, she needs some dry kitten food available at all times.

You can add a touch of plain canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) about 1/4 t - 1/2 t twice a day to her wet food to help firm up her stools.  You can also try plain yogurt to help firm up stools.  If the soft stools continue, then she may need to be on something for sensitive tummies from the vet.  (I have one who cannot tolerate a completely grain-free diet so he gets a bit of prescription food daily.)  If the soft stool turns to diarrhea, then she needs to be tested for tritrichomonas foetus which requires a special stool test.

Thanks so much y'all! I had her on Innova kitten until the recall. :/ I was thinking Royal Canin but googled it and was bad reports. What is your experience with it? I'm gonna get some canned pumpkin ASAP.

I'd stay away from dry food if you can. What about Fancy Feast canned? Other high protein and low carb canned?

Have you thought about raw?

I don't know if this will help but here goes.....I  had a serious problem with diarrhea in a stray I took in last year. Then a second cat developed diarrhea. I had both cats tested for worms and found nothing (I had done all the proper checks before bringing in the stray). But then my vet suggested we run a second test that looked for more exotic bacteria etc. This second test was pricey, about 125.00 per cat and it took several days to get back. What I learned is that  there are other bacteria that can cause diarrhea in cats. The standard fecal culture does not test for them.

Both my cats  had salmonella and a second bacteria. Apparently, in my part of the world cats can pick up salmonella from eating birds.  We did not treat the salmonella, as current thought is unless the cat is seriously ill,  treating can cause the bacteria to become resistant and it never goes away. Apparently, this happens in people as well.   I did have to isolate the cats and needless to say I started Clorox-ing and Lysol-ing everything. I also had wished someone had let me know about this before I brought the stray in. I knew he was a big hunter. I would have still brought him in but I would have tested further before hand.

After two more checks we were confident the salmonella was gone. We then were able to put the cats on antibiotics for the second bacteria. I checked my other cats and it did not spread any of my other kitties.

One last thought is have you checked for girardia (forgive my spelling)? In my part of the world it is a problem. Dogs and cats and people get it. Kittens, puppies, babies and animals with a suppressed immune system are more susceptible. This includes people with HIV.  I have seen bloody diarrhea from a combined problem of hook worms and girardia.

I fed my Tumbles Royal Canin kitten until we switched him to Innova Cat & Kitten (this was in 2010).  I personally like it and so did he.  It isn't grain-free, but still a good food.  Wellness kitten is also good, but as I said previously, does produce stinky poops.  Tumbles loved it, though.

Thanks for all the responses. Fancy Feast is what I feed my finicky eaters at night. Classic only. I've thought about raw. Just haven't followed thru. Not sure where to start. I'm thinking Royal Canin. I've tried Wellness and no luck, but it was wet and Core. So many choices. She has had firmer stools today since antibiotic(precautionary only) but I'm not convinced it isn't food. Neither was the vet. He treated her for parasites even though he saw none just to be safe.

How fast are you transitioning? Fast transitions, especially of dry food, can cause diarrhea/soft stool.

Well I transitioned fast from Innova Prime and kitten to Wilderness bc of the recall and my bag was empty. Now I'm keeping my big cats of wilderness and just transitioning Lala slowly.
