is what I'm feeding my kitties really that bad? I was researching cat nutrition and everywhere says how friskies and fancy feast is horrible :(   Lily is 9 months old, Callie is about a year and a half. I tried the good stuff, when Lily was really little, she wasn't picky, until about 4 months. I used to give her Royal Canin kitten, blue buffulo kitten, and really the good stuff, with no issues. but from four months on, she & Callie have been really picky. Their favorite now and what i get the most of, is Fancy Feast turkey & Cheese, and Purina Turkey & Pasta. I've re tried the good things many many times, but its all a waste. I just feel guilty because I want to give them healthy stuff, and since Lily is still a kitten, kitten food, but she won't have it. I have however, recently started with GNC cat multi vitamins, along with their Whiskas tempatations treats, so that makes me feel a little better.  And they both love their IAMS kitten hard food.. But what I'm asking is their diet ok? Or should i keep trying to push the healthy stuff? (even though they jut leave it and refuse)

Thanks for your help :)

Almost any canned food is better than almost any dry food (check out www.catinfo.org). Even Fancy Feast and Friskies :). The gravy kinds are higher in carbs than the pate types, but still lower-carb than most dry food. Carbs are what you want to avoid for cats; meat protein is what you want more of. Feed as much of a variety as they'll tolerate. Getting cats hooked on one flavor can be a real problem if that flavor gets discontinued or recalled :/.

As for extra vitamins, do be careful. . .even cheap foods have no shortage of vitamins, and you don't want to overdose.

Iams is not a dry food I'd prefer to use---lots of corn. But it's not the worst either.

You want your kittens to eat, period. Even the cheapest dry food is better than nothing at all. It takes quite a lot of calories for a kitten to grow properly.

The Friskies pate style are not really all that bad.  I assume that the information you were getting was not on this site.

As for the extra vitamins, I agree with willowy that they are probably getting enough in the commercial food they are eating.  You might want to try feeding them some raw, if you are close to a place where you can get it.

If they like Fancy feast try the classic varieties instead. They are high protein/low carb. You could also try mixing the food they like with the brands you want them to eat. Replace just a tiny bit of what they eat now with the healthier food and mix it together. Try a little treat on top too.

If you're going to feed dry look for one with more protein than Iams. Merrick BG, Nature's Variety or Wellness Core might be better choices. If you do change dry foods do it VERY gradually, a few new kibbles mixed with the old for a while. An all wet diet would be healthier though.

For healthy treats you can give them Pure Bites. The only ingredient is freeze dried chicken. Mine love them even more than junky treats.

I also agree about skipping the vitamins. Pet food is already supplemented with vitamins, even the cheapest brands. You don't want to overdose.
