So, yesterday I rescued a female snowshoe cat. She had been advertised by two young girls as being found in our downtown area. It's a very busy, mostly business' area.

She was friendly, very thin and very hungry. She didn't use the litterbox for 2 days.

I contacted them to ask whether they had found her home or whether the local shelter could help them. Apparently, they had her scanned, no chip and the shelter told them to either put her back where she was found or find her a home. They had been advertising her locally but after 3 days, no had claimed her.

I asked if they could keep her and they said no, they already had two cats who didn't like her and they couldn't afford a third.

So, she is here with me. She is very pretty. She looks young but is full grown I believe. She's a fairly large, long and still quite thin. No signs of fleas or mites.

I have a vet appt in a week. I am dying to know if she is pregnant, spayed or neither.

I don't see a spay scar. Her nipples are teeny and white/pink..she has never had a litter before. So, if she is pregnant..she is just...

She is NOT in heat...

Gosh I wish there was a simple test to check.

I might have a home lined up...I would love to keep her but..I already have a small herd.

She sounds like a home girl who got astray. Such a beauty wouldnt probably not be dumped, unless belonging to a senior citizen who died, and someone just shashed her out (yes, such happens).

So the chance is big there ARE owners who anxiously hope she will be back. (dont leave full description, let the owners identyfie themselves with the missing details).

The girls doing some seeking doesnt really prove much, you Levi who surely knows all the tricks and ways, it would be wise if you too did a search.

I know a true story told by a vet assistant: They get now and then for pts rescued cats, where the rescuer doesnt find the owners, and cant keep the cat nor has any better solution. They arent happy at pts entirely healthy animals, so the vet allows her to do a search after owners, partly in payed hours.  And has you seen!?  Every year she finds 4-5 of the original owners, without exception missing them deeply and overjoyed over finding them back...

Lesson?  If you have possibility, do always a good search after the owners, if you have any reason at all to think there were legitime owners, before you give up.

Dumpers wont of course not admit they were the owners, so the yesses are from them missing astrays.

....................

Her not pregnant and not visibly spayed.  May it be so as she was starving and astray her time out, she didnt got impregnated, mated or not??  Stress and severe lack of food isnt no good for  getting preg. Not with humans who even dont menstruate in such circumstances, and prob not with cats either.

Good luck!

External spay scars aren't usually visible, unless the vet leaves a small tattoo (I wish all vets would). I can't see a spay scar on any of my cats, and on only one of the dogs. Sometimes you can feel the internal scar, but it's hard to tell the difference between that and the umbilical scar :/. Since she was starving, she's almost certainly a dumped or lost housepet, so maybe she is spayed. Hopefully :vibes:.

Have the vet take a feel. Sometimes they can tell by feeling for the uterus/ovaries, especially if the cat is skinny. Or they can tell the difference between the internal spay scar and the umbilical. Don't fatten her up too much before the appointment! :tongue2: Although sometimes even a vet can't tell at all. I think they can do an ultrasound, if you absolutely need to be sure. My vet just says to wait to see if she goes into heat. . .but that isn't a very good option if you want to re-home quickly.

I agree you should keep looking for her home, put ads up everywhere. She certainly looks well cared for, so I wouldn't give up on them yet. If that fails, I don't think you'll have any trouble placing her, so pretty!

My vet shaved a small spot on the female stray we took in and you could see the spay scar. I was concerned she might be pregnant since she had been gaining weight and looked chunky but I didn't want to cut back on her food if she was pregnant. It was quick and easy.

When I made the vet appt, the secretary said the doctor could try and shave the area. Otherwise, it's wait and see if she comes into heat or becomes obviously pregnant. If she is spayed, I would be almost 100% that a family is missing her. Is she is not spayed, then I would be more concerned that she had irresponsible owners. I highly doubt a reputable breeder would let this girl outside and even if it was an accident, checking the local humane society is an obvious place to look.

I am going to call the shelter tomorrow and leave a vague description of her, in case anyone does contact them. I've scoured kijiji (a buy and sell site) and facebook groups. I've asked the girls to keep an eye out for posters in their area, if anyone does it the old fashioned way. I put an ad in the local paper as well.

She is SO hungry. We have set her up in my daughter room for now. She gets along with my small dogs and my cats but is terrified of my great dane.

I might have discovered why she was "put out". She's been in my daughters room for the past couple days. She uses the litterbox fine but doesn't cover anything up. Tonight, I went in and she had pooped in her tub. There was only one pee in her box..so it wasn't because it was dirty.

I've moved her into my office. We'll see how she does in here. :/

So, yes..def found out why she was put on the streets. Although...why would anyone do that to a cat? She obviously could not fend for herself.

She pee'd in two different places on my hardwood. Now, I did notice she peed three small amounts in her litterbox so, I am not ruling out a bladder infection. She does seem to like her privates alot.

I had to move her to my bathroom so she doesn't ruin my hardwood. It's where I usually keep my fosters but she doesn't like it in there.

I brought my Princess and Panda by other fosters back into my office. I wish her vet appt was sooner...

I took her to vet today. She doesn't feel any babies and says she's not spayed. (shaved her belly)

She was dewormed and had a set of shots. She is booked for a spay June 6th.

Unfortunately, I'll have to find her a nice barn as she clearly has pottying issues which is a deal breaker

for most people.

I want to find her a small barn that they feed and take care of their cats.

Maybe she'll stop the peeing after she's spayed? Ah, we can hope anyway :tongue2:. Try Cat Attract and different kinds of litter to see if you can entice her back. Litterbox problems are terrible :(.
