Hi everyone,

Seems this is my year for sick kitties...

Tonight my youngest kitty Evil (2 year old) started acting odd. He would start walking around crying then flop over on his side and start licking at his genital/anal area. He licks at it obsessively for a minute or two then goes off like normal again. Hes been doing this for about an hour now. Other then this behavior he is acting normal, still eating/drinking, playing around, no vomiting. The only other sign that he isnt feeling himself is that he has hissed/growled at me a few times when i go near him which isn't normal for him. Ive got him locked in my room now, I'm hoping to be able to see if it has to do with constipation or maybe a UTI problem.

Anyone have ideas on what this is?

I'll be taking him into the vet first thing in the morning, but since its late now i have to wait til then.

Thanks for any help!

Have you seen him urinate? When a male cat blocks he will die within 24 hours. I would consider this an emergency.

I wouldn't wait until morning. From the behavior you describe I am sure your cat is in extreme pain. Call your vet's phone number and find out who is on call for emergencies, or if you have an ER vet center in your area, take him there. Tomorrow morning may be too late.

He only just started acting odd around an hour ago though, before that he was completely normal, playing and such like he normally does. Also, although i haven't actualy seen him urinate, he hasn't been squatting in the box crying or doing anything like he did last time he had a UTI. I have him locked in with me and a litterbox, if he doesn't go soon I'll see about bringing him in, but he has stopped crying now and is just wandering around acting mostly normal. It seems hes stopped licking at himself to, so i dont know.

Just keep in mind that a cat doesn't show pain until the pain is so severe it can no longer be hidden. I know you will keep a close eye on him, but I am just telling you what I would do. Since this is a male cat with a history of urinary tract problems (something I didn't know before) I would not wait until morning, if it was my kitty. I hope he will be okay.

I know no one likes the *I can't afford it* excuse, but Pixel's vet bills were very high because we had multiple visits, a very extensive surgery charge, then the cremation charge on top of that, and that was just over a month ago. Emergency vets around here charge 5x more then the regular vets, so that has to be a very last resort.

Please don't see my hesitation to bring him in as something that I just want to do, if it hadn't been for everything with Pixel he would be at the vet already, but I can't do that right now.

Well, the good news is I know that he isn't blocked now. He just peed in one of the cat beds in my room, crying the whole time. So I'm pretty sure its a UTI again, he was just really good at hiding it this time. So we will be to the vet in about 3.5 hours when they open.

Sorry for the late update,

Evil is fine, turns out its just a UTI that seems to have snuck up on him. He's on antibiotics and acting much better already.

I wouldn't call a UTI in a cat with a history of UTIs "just". UTIs are not normal and, especially in males, are a very serious health issue.

I would be looking for why he is getting them to prevent any more.

Diet is the first place to look. Keep your cat on a canned diet, low in carbohydrates, high in meat protein, no fish. Keep him at a healthy weight, make sure he gets enough exercise and prevent stress. Not that you don't, but it goes with the list, keep the litter boxes very clean. :)

If you haven't ever been there, here's a good website to help you

I've been through having a cat with multiple UTI's before, and this is only his second in almost 3 years, and both times have gone with stressful events. The first time was after he had to stay at the vets for a few days, and this time we figure was triggered by Pixel's death, so other then adding some more wet food to his diet we are just going to watch him carefully after any stressful events. If he does get another, we will be looking further into it.

For years my cat had emergencies because of UTIs. For a year he has been eating ProPlan Urinary Tract Health Formula, and now he doesn’t have any more problems. It’s not the best food, but it’s the best for him. You need to get some food low in magnesium.
