The *general* rule of thumb is 20 to 30 calories per pound assuming the cat is neither over or under weight, normal level of activity.  Indoor/outdoor cats need more; feral cats need significantly more.  A lot of the higher end can cat food list the calories; other brands, the information is usually available online.

Kittens need much more because they are still growing.

8 to 12 pounds is a wide range; at 8 pounds Ritz (female) would be too skinny, 12 pounds, too fat.

But these calories should come largely from protein, not carbohydrates; with cats, not all calories are created equal.  (Cats utilize calories from protein much more efficiently than calories from carbs.)

Here is an article that might help you.

The real rule of thumb is:  how does your cat look?  Can you feel his ribs (good) when you pet him?  Can you *see* his ribs (too skinny, not good)?

A lot of spayed/neutered indoor adult cats do fine on one 5.5-oz can a day, depending on the calorie content of the food. Kittens, however, need far more calories per pound and a 6-month-old needs a lot more than half a can. That's definitely not enough for a growing teenager.

Well, at 6 weeks she probably does only eat half a can! :D Such a tiny baby. But she'll need a lot more as she gets older---some older kittens need 3 cans a day! Just tell your friend that kittens need to be fed as much as they can eat, until they're about a year old, then you can cut back to adult rations.

I don't know if that's a good idea. . .he'll just go on thinking that giving a growing kitten half a can is enough and then he'll tell all his friends that. If she does get skinny and you have to feed her, make sure he knows about it--point out how skinny she is, etc.

Our 10mo old neutered male gets 9oz of wet per day with an ounce or so of dry kibble left out for snacking (if we're going to be out for a bit).  We weigh ourselves regularly, then weigh again holding Si and he's remained at 9-9.5lbs.  He does get, and requires, a lot of play time at this age, and we're feeding the fancy feast variety of wet in the 3oz cans.

You can feel, but not see his ribs and from above he still has a waistline.  I would have to defer to much more experienced cat owners here, but I agree that a kitten that young, and presumably playful, needs to eat as much as they want.
