Hello everyone! Okay, there’s a little back story to my issue. We adopted Ollie and Wally in December when they were 4 months old. Ollie is overall pretty healthy, he was taken from his mother at an appropriate age to keep Wally company. My poor Wally, however, had a pretty tumultuous first few months of his life. He was found in a ravine at 3 weeks old, and has had medical issues ever since (his poor medical history was like a book when we adopted him!). About a month after adoption, they both began having loose stools. We took them to the vet, did fecal samples for each, and it was determined Ollie had some major giardia, but Wally’s test came back negative. They put Ollie on an anti-diarrhea and giardia medicine, and although we asked if Wally should be on the giardia medicine too in case it spread, we were told no. Things cleared up for about a month and a half, and then poor Wally began having runny stool with a little bit of blood again. We had him at the vet almost every week for a month, and after another fecal test, we were told it still came back negative for giardia. However, the vet decided to treat him as if he had giardia because apparently they can still have it even if the tests are coming back negative (which was a little frustrating to find out). So Wally was on anti-diarrhea medicine for two weeks (which didn’t help at all and only majorly stressed him out when we gave it to him), and the giardia medicine for 5 days. He then got sick again with an eye issue this time (they got very red and he got very lethargic and not at all like himself). We took him in to the vet again, which we think stressed him out even more, they gave him some eye drops, then every think was hunky-dory for a few weeks. Now, for the past week or so, Ollie has had runny stool again and although Wally was fine for the first week, he is now having intermittent runny stool with blood (sometimes bright red). At first, we had hoped it was something easy to fix, like stress-related (we had to take them with us to my mother-in-law’s house while we house-sat her two cats and two dogs & they had never met a dog before). We also had a house guest at our house last week, which we thought may have added to the stress. However, a week has gone by and they are both still having runny stool with the occasional solid one. My question is, what should we do?? We’d hate to take Wally to the vet to stress him out even more because taking him there seems to stress him out more and more each time. We’re going to do a fecal sample soon to rule out giardia, but any other ideas?? I’ve read the raw food diet has helped some cats, and I’m basically willing to try anything at this point that doesn’t subject Wally to more medication (the poor guy was on something or the other for almost a month straight!) Right now we feed them Wellness Core Kitten canned food in the morning and night, and give them Holistic Select Adult & Kitten- Chicken dry food twice a day as well. We have been mixing Hill Prescription w/d, which the vet recommended when we first brought Wally back, but I’m not a huge fan of it. Sorry this is so long, but we’ve been racking our brains trying to figure out what to do! Thank you for reading!

Let me also add that it's not that we don't want to take them to the vet, it's just that the vet has been a little inconsistent (we've seen a different vet the past 3 or 4 times we've gone in), and I feel like if we're going in with the same issues as before, they're just going to diagnose giardia and put Wally on the awful anti-diarrhea medicine again. We just want to do what's best for him and not stress him out even more because he's proven to have a very sensitive digestive system and doesn't do overly well with strangers :( I also forgot to add that both of their eating and drinking habits have been normal (they're both big water drinkers to begin with), and they are still running around like the crazy cats they are!

Were the fecal samples sent to an outside lab, and did they test for anything besides giardia? Have you tried just feeding canned food rather than giving dry food, too? Did you try giving solely the w/d for a couple of weeks to see if it helped, or was it always mixed with the Wellness? Did the vets talk about possible food intolerance?

I believe they just did the testing at the vet, and as far as I know they only tested for giardia because the kittens had been tested for worms and parasites right before we adopted them and the results had been negative. We haven't tried feeding them just canned food because I thought we had a good balance of both, but it's definitely something that we can try. We did have Wally soley on the w/d for about 4-5 days (wet and dry), but I believe after about the 4th day he absolutely refused to eat the wet. I wasn't too bummed about that because the day he stopped eating it I found a giant rubber bandy thing in the wet food. We continued the dry food for another few days before we started mixing it back with their normal food. And no, none of the vets have talked about food intolerance. They're also both on probiotics, and Wally is getting lysine as well because the vet thought his eye issue may have been a herpes related problem
