So I've been thinking on using nail caps on my kitten she is not a big scratch but sometimes my sisters dog comes over and they play but she claws him and I don't want him to get hurt. Is it too cruel? And how do they work?

I don't believe gel caps are cruel - I don't know too much about them as i don't use them.  I would ask your vet and get a professional application, at least for the first time to show you how it is done.  I think you need to re-do each month.

The two things that would give me pause in this situation are his age - how fast do claws grow in a young kitten?  Would this be a problem for the gel caps?

Then there is the fact he feels the need to defend himself against the incoming dog.  The dog is on his territory, and a cat won't scratch unless they are scared/defending themselves.  In which case, I would not like to take away their defenses.  And I think it would be a better solution (given scratching anyone else is not an issue), that the fear in this situation is dealt with - again, I don't know anything from the brief description, but perhaps more supervision/proper re-introductions are needed?

Unless the dog has some kind of skin condition, just trimming the kittens' nails should be enough to prevent dog damage. I wouldn't recommend using nail caps for that. But I also don't think using nail caps is cruel :). I just don't think they should be used unnecessarily.

:yeah: Perfectly said. I don't use them, but don't think they are cruel either. I do not think using the nail caps for this kitten is really necessary. The dog doesn't live with you. Also, the dog can be trained to leave the kitten alone, right? Although, maybe it is the kitten wanting to play :dk:. Also, trimming the tips off of the kittens nails is the way to go here. If you need instruction to do so, I would recommend going to a groomer OR the vet, and have them show you how to trim the kittens claws. This can be done each week!!!

I start trimming nails as soon as I can.  Spencer and Katie were about 12 weeks when I brought them home, and the first thing I did was trim their nails.   I regularly trim them so they don't get caught on the carpet or blankets, and so they can't damage my furniture should they decide to scratch on it.

I don't trim the back nails though. I'm thinking of starting though because I'm tired of getting scratched when they leap off of me.
