A family friend of mine had a cat who had a litter of 3 kittens. I took all 3, anticipating I would keep 2 and I would give one to my mother-in-law.

They will be 8 weeks in 2 days (born March 12th, 2013) so this afternoon I picked them up and brought them all to get their first shots. I then dropped one off with my mother -in-law, and brought my 2 kittens home.

4 hours later I received a call that my mother-in-law's kitten had passed away :( They had put him in a crate with a litter box, hard kitten food, and water and left him alone for a little while to let him get some sleep. When they found him, he was dead with his tounge sticking out.

I am beyond devistated. I can't help thinking this was my fault. No one knows what happened but all I can think of is that maybe he either chocked on his food, or had a reaction to the vaccines.

Now I am freaking out, wondering if my kittens are going to make it through their first night home. I don't know what to do.

Sadly, some cats do have acute reactions to vaccines. It usually occurs fairly quickly, though---within half an hour or so, most of the time. It's impossible to know what happened for sure without a necropsy, but choking is definitely suspect. Was it warm where the crate was placed? Overheating is another possibility. Sorry for your (and your MIL's) loss :(.
