Ok here is the story. My cousins r bringing a kitten that I believe has ear mites to my house and they r leaving her there. The problem is that I myself have a kitten too. My question is about MY KITTEN not my cousins (no offense). What can I do to prevent my kitten from getting ear mites? And once the kitten is gone is it necessary to clean the whole house? It's a 2 story with 5 rooms do I HAVE to clean? Please help I don't want my kitten to get ear mites ):

Aww..poor kitty. Ear mites are very uncomfortable for the cat. He should get treated asap anyway, so could they get their cat treated before bringing him to your house? Do they have to bring him over while he has ear mites? Otherwise I think your kitten will most likely get them.

Keep the new cat in a seperate room while he is there if possible. Ask your vet if there are any ways to help prevent your cat from getting them.

Good luck to Mittens

Ear mites arent very contagious. You are probably thinking on fleas... They go easy from the cat onto everything...  Of course, a cat who has mites can also have other parasites...

continuing.  Deparasiting / deworming is best done / adviced by a vet.  A good all round preparate is Revolution drop on...

A home remedy against mild mites attacks is  simply to drop one drop of food oil into the ear.  The oil smears itself out, and the mites suffocate in it.  One, at most two drops, no more.

Exactly how do it, I have heard different opinons. Some say clean as well you can before, others say - clean as well you can first afterwards...  I suppose the afterwards is best...

Observe, if you yourself clean the ears, be careful, dont dig too deeply - easy to harm the inner parts of the ear...

Good luck!

well since i am so traumatized because where I live they charge like $60+ just to check for ear mites I've been doing research and everyone says they are very contagious and that they can even remain hidden around the house. My biggest concern is that i am a full time student and I do not have a job so my bf pays for everything that mittens needs and I am sure he wont want to pay to get her checked :( Can I still try that oil remedy even if she doesnt have any? is any oil good?

Yes, the oil is a harmless home remedy for ear mites. Not good enough in severe cases, but works in mild cases.   And doesnt harm anything if there are no real mites in there.

Just dont overdo the drops, and careful when you clean, so you dont happen to hurt her in there.

You must do it again now and then after they are gone. Say a new shorter session once a week for a month, to be sure all their eggs(?) are gone.

I would try with some good quality olive oil, but probably most food oils will do, even some children mineral oils.

Just one or two drops.   The unused oil you can use when cooking.   :)

Search here on forum or google, if you want, to get more exact details.

Good luck!

ps.  If you are tight on money but want to deworm.  Go to your pharmacy and look what they have for animals. Write it up, and ask here or google on it...

Do they have Revolution spot on?  Revolution  is fairly mild, and takes most of parasites and worms, only not tape worms. Take the variant for cats.

Dont never use random over the count buyed preparates. Some of them sold otc arent good, or even - dangerous.

One last thing... how exactly do they catch ear mites? Would they have to rub on each other in order to pass them? And is it true when they scratch they fall out and leave them there so they r picked up by the other cats in this case my mittens?

happyliz-

Here is a reputable article which covers all of those questions: http://marvistavet.com/html/body_ear_mites.html and provides a more comprehensive coverage of appropriate treatments.

Maybe you should bookmark that site for future reference - it is one of the reliable online sites for veterinary medical issues. You didn't mention where you did your researching - but, you should know that, when it comes to your kitty's health, sites like 'e-how' are more properly read as e-how-NOTs !
