I just received a card from the vet about bringing in my 6 month old kittens to be spayed and for rabies shots. Should I wait a bit longer or is 6 months the recommended time to have them spayed? Lucy, the lighter tabby, is thinner and not as heavy as Cindy, who looks close to a full grown cat. Lucy, by comparison, looks more like a slender kitten. Should both kittnes go in at the same time
to be spayed?

6 months is a good time to get a cat spayed. Taking both of them in at the same time usually saves you money because it is one office call and not two.

6 months of age is the perfect time to take them in to be speyed. They are old and strong enough to handle an anaesthetic but without the complications of speying an older cat. Plus, trust me you do not want them to go into season! Unless they have already, at 6 months they are just about ready. The sooner they go the better. One of my female cats went into season at 4 months but thats another story.

Take them in together. That way they will have eachother for company before and after the surgery (being at the vet a whole day is pretty scary for a little kitty) and they will both be able to recover quietly at home at the same time. If one goes in without the other when "she" gets home she will have a vet smell which can cause some animosity between them. If they go together they will smell the same so it should all be fine.

Good luck to your babies when they have their surgery!

I agree with the other two posts. That is a great age to have them done at.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

When I brought a couple of kittens back home from being fixed,my other cats(they were already fixed)hissed and growled at them for several days cause they smelled different. So yes it is a lot better to have them done at the same time.

Thanks, all, for your suggestions. Yo've made me feel much better about taking the kittens in for this important procedure. (but it's still scary!)

I found this new bird feeder product from Havahart. It would be nice for recuperating kittens who are into bird watching. We used to have a bird feeder hanging from the porch gutter years ago, but the squirrels eventually chewed on it, broke it, and we didn't replace it because the birdseed attracted mice. Maybe it's time for a new one.

sometimes the cats are fixed way before 6 mos! I think 6 mos is the absolute latest age.
