Growing up,what was the best advice your got from your parents ?

My mom & dad always told me to finish school and get good grades. What did I do ? I didn't follow their advice.I quit school and got married. I recently went to GED classes back haven't been back because of my car being broken down and gas.

I told my daughter to stay in school and she did get pregnant before school had ended for her. She had her regular school and she went to a  joint vocational school for her 12th yr.

And my son did graduate also. I regret I didn't finish school. Mom and Dad didn't like me getting married but can't  fight it now.Things turned out ok.

So what would be your best advice to your children in the year 2013 ?

My mother told me when I was a teenager that I would regret going barefoot so much, when I got older. I never wore shoes, if I could get away with it. She was right. I have terrible arthritis in my feet now.

My father used to say, "if you don't have the cash for it, you can't afford it." You can tell he didn't like debt. When I started driving he talked to me about car maintenance, "It doesn't matter so much if the car starts, but it has to be able to stop!" When I was 6 and he taught me to shoot a rifle, he said, "Loaded or unloaded, you don't point a gun at anything unless you want to kill it."

My mother taught me by example: how not to treat your children, and what kind of person not to marry.

I'm not trying to contradict your mother, but are you sure she was right, that going barefoot can cause arthritis? I can see how shoes and arch support would help with pain after developing the disease, but I always thought that healthy feet benefit from walking barefoot. If there's a pre-exisiting foot issue (or other issue such as excessive weight), then sure walking barefoot could be a problem but I didn't think going barefoot could cause inflammation in healthy feet.

Same here.  My husband is Pakistani and over there alot go barefoot.  I have a previous injury to my foot that make it hurt no matter what but barefoot is less pain.

Finish school was tops on both parents and stepparents.  I did not make it through:(  Lack of concentration(like everything else in my life that has suffered from it).

well this might sound mean but the best advice came from co-workers, friends, etc. Not family. Parents included. They (mom and dad) transferred a few neuroses to me while I was growing up and even in my 20s so I'm still working all that out with the help of therapy.
