When Should I Expect Kittens?

Hello,

I foster cats and kittens and I just took on a pregnant cat from the pound who is very pregnant. Because she is from the pound, I have no idea when she got pregnant or how long she has been pregnant. Her babies would have been euthanized at birth had she not gotten out, so I took her on as I wouldn't let that happen. Anyway, I don't have any previous experience with pregnant cats and would love some advice.

I have set up two nesting boxes for her. One is a cage with lots of blankets and a blanket on top covering the back and the sides, only open in the front. I thought this would be nice and dark for her, and the other is a box with blankets underneath and newspaper on top (I heard they like to tear the newspaper up). She doesn't show any interest in either of these, she likes to sleep on a blanket I left on the floor.

I noticed today her milk has come in. I can feel the kittens kicking and have felt them kicking for a few days now.

Any ideas when the kittens should be here?

Any advice really would be nice. I have already read a ton and talked to vets, but the more information, the better I think :)

Thanks everyone!

I am very excited haha! She isn't nesting yet, or digging at anything.

I am having some worries because she was given revolution for fleas and a pill for worms a few days ago and I haven't felt the kittens today. Though I guess I haven't spent long with my hand on her belly as she is moving around a lot. I heard you are not meant to deflea or worm your pregnant cat? The vet did both, so I hope the babies are ok :(

Oh wow, I saw your post about KC, I am surprised she hasn't had her babies yet! Well... if she hasn't had them yet, I don't think Faith will have them before her haha.

It was the vet who gave the defleaing medication and worming pills, so I assume they know what they are doing... otherwise I will not be happy. But I looked it up and it said Revolution is fine for pregnant cats :)

I have the same problem with my cat. But have put nesting boxes in every room,& she is just not interested! She would rather lie all day on my husbands chair. Nikki has not got any milk come in,but she's huge & getting really kicked. Does anyone have any advice on when its likely she.ll have her kitties& will she ever go in one of the boxes?

I heard you are not meant to deflea or worm your pregnant cat? The vet did both, so
They can and should be defleased and dewormed!  the art is to know which preparate to use, especially as many over the count preparates are worthless or even dangerous.  It is why we always recommend to ask your vet. Which you did.   :)

Revolution is supposed to be one of them OK preparates.

Welcome to our Forums!

Good luck!

ps. I suppose the deworming pill was against tape worms, as Revolution takes both fleas and round worms.

Image to admit I am getting quite nervous now,can she get one stuck,if so, can I help her?? And big Tom hanging round in garden. Is it true they can get pregnant whilst being pregnant????? mikki116, she can't get pregnant while being pregnant as she is already pregnant. However, she can get pregnant again very shortly after having her babies. So I would recommend spaying her if you don't want anymore litters. Also read up as much as you can about when the kittens are born and what to do if one gets stuck, you might need it. Probably won't, but it is better to know what to do in case it happens.

Thanks everyone for your advice. Yes the vets wormed and deflead her, I didn't do it, so I assume they know what they are doing. I just read a lot about not doing it so I was feeling a bit panicked. I don't think she looks that big, but the vets say she will have them sometime before Tuesday. She just looks like a chubby cat, though I guess she is only 7 months old and is quite small still, so she looks like she isn't that big.

Hope the babies come soon, I am getting very excited :)

Update on mama cat, when I spent time with her yesterday, she kept rolling around wanting me to rub her belly... she hasn't done this before. She is also going inside her nest and moving the blankets around how she wants them.

Does that sound like a good sign? :)

I can't wait for the babies to come. She is still eating a lot, so I'm not sure the babies will come TOO soon as I hear they stop eating for a bit, or only have a few bites.

Have attached a couple photos for everyone to see. She isn't huge, but she has grown a lot in the past week. She is only around 10 months old so she is still quite a small cat to begin with, and the photos make her belly look a bit smaller than it actually is.

My Ginny showed no signs until half
hour before she had the 1st one. She loved having her belly rubbed and coat stroked and had been very loving, but she hadn't shown much interest in the birthing area. I would say you don't have much longer to go.

Just an update on Faith, she hasn't had her babies yet but I believe she is showing signs now.

She has gotten so much bigger, she can't clean her bum anymore. She has had soft poo yesterday, not runny that I should be concerned (like it wasn't liquid) but it was really really soft. (Sorry for too much info).

She has also started to really move the blankets around in her nest, which she wouldn't even get into up until a few days ago.

She is a bit more vocal, but has always been vocal since I got her two weeks ago.

The babies have been moving a lot, but they have been moving for two weeks (maybe more but I only got her two weeks ago and have felt them since the start).

Hope the babies come soon, I am excited to meet them :)
