Do you name the kittens that you don't plan to keep?

I'm asking because I'm starting to feel stupid calling these kittens by their markings ( little black one, little tortie one ect). I kind of want to name the kittens because I'm planning on keeping them until they are 12 weeks old and spayed and neutered. But I'm worried that naming them will just be one step closer to keeping them and I already have 5 cats.

Name them... whoever takes them may like the name.

When the time comes you'll be able to let them go to good homes, and in the meantime it's a lot easier to say!

When I rasied fosters, I named them. It was so much easier to track, as Mani said, and all but one of them ended up keeping thier names in the new homes. Potential adopters though the name was cuter. :)

Yes, for sure I do. Some people keep the names and others change them. Easier...to keep track.

I let my daughter name the kittens from the 2 litters our (former) stray had before we had her spayed. The first litter had animal names: Pony, Panda,Tiger and Blossom (not an animal name, but she was the color of an orange blossom milk shake). The second litter were all baseball teams: Yankee, Oriole (which turned to Oreo) and Dodger.

We kept Yankee and Oreo (now called Cookie).

ok I have to add my daughter to this discussion here. As soon as 1 of her cats has kittens the grandkids start nameing them. This time there were 5 new ones born about 2 weeks ago, But one good thing,my daughter always finds good homes for these little ones when they are ready to leave mommy. But sometimes she  keeps the last one.. Her house is like a zoo. 2 full grown cats ( mother & daughter ) who gives birth about 2 months apart all the time .Friends loves the cats so she has not spayed them yet but is willing to do it after this batch is gone.she has 2 dogs,fish,2 geckos. She had 4 chickens,1 rooster but Bailey the dog got them.

Do you have a zoo at your house ?  2 cats are enough for me.

Dejolane-

Is your Daughter a registered breeder or are these just her "housecats?" Allowing a female cat to get pregnant over and over again is not only incredibly irresponsible, but is incredibly dangerous for the cat. Allowing her to have litter after litter dramatically increases her chances of mammary cancer and puts her at great risk for life-threatening pyometra.

The ONLY time a cat should be allowed to have kittens is when the owner is an experienced breeder with a reputable organization. Responsible breeders do significant amounts of research and are trained on how to let their Queens have kittens the safest way possible. Litters are never unplanned and a lot of work goes into making sure they are physically ready and are matched with the right Tom. And, their cats receive regular and frequent veterinary care to help minimize all these risks.

It's understandable that sometimes things happen and a cat accidentally becomes pregnant but this should only happen once. Allowing the cycle to continue is nothing short of unethical. She should absolutely have them both spayed as soon as possible. If she loves raising kittens so much she would be a valuable addition to any shelter where hundreds of unwanted kittens are euthanized everyday. Fostering is a great way to keep your cats healthy and safe and allows you the chance to have kittens around the house. Think of how many kittens could have been saved had she fostered instead of letting her girls get pregnant. Such a shame.

DeJolane, EB24.  I see EB24 doesnt no beating in the bushes, nor is going like cat around hot gruel, like the swedish proverb says.

I myself would put it milder and more diplomatic, but in essence I do agree with all of EB24 points.

The standing and philosophy of this Forum; owner, staff, most participants, is pro spaying if you arent a breeder, rescuing where possible, etc...

I hope you DeJolane and your dau will reconsider, and turn around.  You yourself mention the dau is now going to spay her females, so you are perhaps already on the way??.

You are apparently very good at finding good homes.  You are also good at raising kittens.

You can make good now, cooperating with some rescue group, or shelter. Taking in high preg rescuees, foster them if necessary, help them raise their kittens, help find adoptions homes...   Making the world a little better.

Your grand children will continue to have kittens to play with and help them be well socialized.

Good luck!

Well I've decided I'm going to name them but I haven't come up with anything yet.
