Do you follow his /her orders ? Do you finish all your medication ?

My doctor told me not to eat sauces cause of my acid reflux and heartburn.

Well I have no insurance so if I go to dr it is serious(I get colds that turn into bronchitis or worse real fast).  After that money I follow it regarding meds!  I am the sort that really waits it out(have ended up in hospital unable to move arm due to lung issue)

The "get rid of all your cats dogs" HECK NO!!!  I lie about the cats(10 sounds better to me...) so I will turn to dr and say oh you know a good place for 10 cats and 2 dogs??? That ends THAT fast.

I usually have on hand antibiotics and pred(ordered online) but every so often I don't and forced to go.

Sometimes yes/sometimes no.

l'm currently being sent here, there, and everywhere for testing, blah! lf l get meds l don't always take them to the end.

On the other hand, when l was at the doctor 5 1/2 years ago, l had a flu that turned into bronchitis (first time ever with bronchitis). The doctor told me l needed to quit smoking, so l did! l never lit up another after that conversation.

Always! If I ever have to get medication from the doctors I take it till the end, they dont just give you them to take for fun imo, I would rather take them for a day or so after I feel better so that I know I am better rather than having to go back in a couple of weeks to have to get the same stuff again.

Same for when I had to go for physio to, they know best not me!

If I'm going to spend the money for the doctor's appt, well, yes, I'm going to follow her orders. Anything else is a waste of money and time.

(Although I used to have a doctor who was bound and determined to get me to about 125 pounds. Know what? I look terrible at 125 pounds. Literally skin and bones....it's that bad. And I can't stay at 125....I tried and I can't. She didn't care. "For your height and structure, this is what you NEED to weigh." Thankfully, she moved on, another doctor came in, and she's more realistic with me. As long as my blood pressure is good and my blood work is OK, she normally doesn't give me a rough time. Normally. She really yelled at me back in January when she realized I had gained almost 30 pounds over the fall and winter. She was not amused....neither was I.)

If I have meds, I take them until they're gone. Thankfully, I haven't had to take anything lately.

Depends. If the med is causing me a bad side effect, I won't finish it.  That was the case with the thyroid medicine he prescribed. I told him about it though and he agreed I should stop taking it.

Working in the healthcare industry, one of my biggest pet peeves are those people who take up appointment space and not show up for their appointments, or come and then totally disregard what the doctor says.

IMHO if you aren't going to listen to the doctor and follow their directive, then don't take up a much needed appointment slot that someone who might have been able to use who was serious about their health.

Agreed.

I'm also concerned about increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

I do take antibiotics until they are gone. If I had followed the doctor's orders, I would have had some surgeries I really didn't need. Sometimes a person has to educate themselves and make their own decisions if it involves surgery. That can be true for medicines too. The bisphosphonates that are prescribed for osteoporosis can cause some really bad side effects. One of the side effects if esophagus problems for which they prescribe the nexium or prilosec. Now they are saying long term use of those medicines can cause osteoporosis. It is a vicious circle. Sometimes we just have to decide what to take and when to take it for ourselves. By the way, I just had a bone density test and it had changed very little and some for the better in one area in a five year span. That makes me double glad I quit the medicines.

I have a health savings acct., which pays for a physical and a mammo every year. My deductable is $5000 though to keep my premiums down, so needless to say I don't go in unless I HAVE to! When I do I listen and follow the Dr's advise, hopefully they know more then I do. The only time I didn't was when they wanted me to give up my cats because of an allergy they couldn't figure out. I kept the cats and the allergy finally went away!

l have to agree with Blueyedgirl. l would try to educate myself on my cats' health and challenge their vets ideas, so why not my own doctor?

l have been prescribed broad spectrum antibiotics that l did not finish taking. After 5 days of no change, they were not working and l called and asked for something else. l got Ceclor, and within 2 days there was noticeable improvement. l could have wasted another 5 days on Amoxicillin but chose not to.

Same with pain meds. l injured my back, and when it flares up, l happily take the muscle relaxants l'm prescribed, but don't want to take pain meds. They always prescribe them anyway - l either fill the prescription and don't take them, or just don't fill it.
