They're coming in to do a final measurement. I'm not sure what day yet they're coming to install the floor, but they'll tell us on Tuesday.

We chose a luxury vinyl grouted tile. Why vinyl? Because of my legs, more than anything. Ceramic tile is really hard and I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. There are days when I'm in the kitchen pretty much all day and I don't sit down....I'm on my feet the entire day. Yes, I can put a rug down, but a rug is just something else for the cats to puke on.

Ceramic tile can also be dangerous if it gets wet; it's really slippery. We talked and talked about it and we decided to go with the vinyl tile. I think I'll be happy with it.

We'll have to move everything into the living room: stove, fridge, and the hutch. And the dining room table. Fun, fun! We have to get some plywood, so we don't do too much damage to the carpet. It will have to be a nice day for the installation, too, because of any fumes....we don't want the cat getting sick, so the windows will have to be open.

So they'll come in Tuesday night for the final measurements and then they'll install and grout the floor. Rick said he doesn't want to have to deal with it at all, although he's agreed to be home for the installation.

And then.....we still have to finish the under-cabinet lighting, the backsplash, and the new fridge.

When that's all finished, we're starting in on the new bathroom.

Sounds nice!!  I'm not crazy about ceramic tile because of the slip factor myself.  I've seen those gel mats that are supposed to be good to stand on; but it also looks like something that crumbs will get all on the edge of and that's just an ick factor for me.

Please post pics when it's in!  I'd love to see the results!

It's a vinyl tile. It's not linoleum....doesn't come in a long sheet. The tiles are pieces and the pieces come in a box. You put the tiles on the floor and then put grout in between the tiles, just like you would for a ceramic or porcelain tile floor. It's an acrylic grout, which the guy promised me would not crumble apart. We are going with Avante tile by Earthwerks.

I didn't want the ceramic because of my back and leg issues. I didn't want hardwood because of the potential for water to ruin the hardwood. My sister put in a laminate wooden floor in her kitchen and then had some sink issues. The floor wasn't even two months old and they had to fix it.

Here's a link: http://www.earthwerks.com/details.php?type=vinyl&name=Avante  It has a limited lifetime warranty. Easy to clean....I use Bona cleaner on my kitchen floor, bathroom floor, and the wood floor in the computer room.

Either the 1651 or 1652 tile....haven't decided completely yet, but am really looking at the 1651. I like the colors in it with our cabinets and the granite countertop. I have to decide by Tuesday night!

Mooch, we saw those gel mats, too, and yes, there's an ick factor for me as well. Not just with crumbs, but any rug will be puked on. Fact of life in this house. Yepper, will do pics! We have to get the new light installed, too.

Oh, and remember the kitchen window that Rick wants some kind of a shade there? I'm going to a business in town on Monday that specializes in window coverings, just to see what they have. It's fairly close to work, so I can just walk over.

That's going to look really nice! We've got stone tile in our kitchen, and while I can't complain about it being too hard or slippery when wet, it's very cold in the winter because the kitchen is over an unheated cellar room.

We definitely want some pictures once it's been installed!

I can't wait to see pictures and hear how you like it.  I've been putting off doing my kitchen floor for far too long because I can't decide what to use.  I am the world's messiest cook, the cats food and water are in there, and I have back and knee issues, as well.

I think where I work has something similar in the public bathroom. I thought it was real ceramic tile for the longest time--very realistic. I'm now thinking about using it in my kitchen!

I love the new luxury vinyl tiles, and they also come in a wood planking too, but they're still vinyl,  not laminate.  Think that's what we're going to put down in our upstairs bathroom (the wood planking luxury vinyl "tile", since the entire rest of the upstairs is wood flooring.

You're so right about tile being hard.  We have Saltillo Tile floors in the entire downstairs, and the other day I was lying on the floor playing with the cats, and finally I just had to get up because my bones couldn't take it anymore
.  Oh man, I'm getting old

I've heard so much about the hardness of tile and I simply didn't want to go there, even though ceramic tile is gorgeous. I know that my legs wouldn't take being on ceramic tile all day long. It's a bugger getting old! We'll have to check on the vinyl wood planking....we want to rip out the bedroom carpet and replace it with laminate.....not real wood because of cat puke.

Tile guy couldn't come last night....the company is run by an Amish family and he had a family emergency (his building is lit with propane gas lights and there's no electricity). He's coming now on Thursday night. And that's fine; things happen. Rick and I wonder if he'll get a ride with somebody or if he'll show up in a horse and buggy. I'm serious....we have a lot of Amish families in our area and there a lot of horses and buggies going up and down the roads.

I read some on the web link you included. If I understand the tiles are only 1/8 inch thick. How do they grout that.

I grew up close to an amish community and they do really good work with everything craftsman like that they do.  I think along with living a simple old-fashioned life, they have the old style work ethic and caring about their work.

1/8" isn't very thin. . .I think bathroom wall tiles are 1/8" thick, and there's no problem grouting those.

I was at a restaurant the other day, and the floor in the ladies' room looked like wood, although I could tell it wasn't, but I couldn't tell what it WAS made of! I even touched it (eww, touching a restaurant bathroom floor :tongue2:) and still wasn't sure. But I do think it was a higher-end vinyl planking. It was heavily textured and grouted in the seams. I really liked it. . .I'll have to look into that.

They use some kind of acrylic grout and, supposedly, it works better. The grout won't crumble and it's supposed to hold effectively.

I hope you will give us some pictures. I have vinyl flooring in my kitchen, dining room, utility room and office. I have never liked it and am thinking of replacing it.

I love that vinyl grouted tile. Am considering it as well for the kitchen! But will probably just keep the tile that we already have (a taupe quarry 8 inch tile) and re-grout. Yeah, I know, re-grouting is a TON of work. I might hire "grout doctors" to come and give me an estimate.

We want to see pictures!!! (just like I keep promising pictures of my kitchen :anon: :lol3:)
