I just now saw this thread - and I'm so sorry for Lazio's distress - and hope that there is a simple solution.

I'm also just now reading this, and am glad his HCT was so good
and that the Vet is so positive about things.  I'm sure that is a relief to you,  but know you won't be completely settled until the final results come back.

that it IS just a temporary irritation...maybe hairball related

Sally, that's very possible.

Of course, the issue is that if he's having issues with hairballs, that means there's a problem with motility. There's not much to do other than what I already am (egg yolks, egg yolk lecithin, some slippery elm bark powder twice a week)... other than suppress the acid to prevent ulcers. We're on a two weeks on - two weeks off schedule right now; she thinks we should probably stick to that, if he was having a greater incidence of hairballs while on pepcid full time (which he seemed to be). This was during the two weeks off, so instead of waiting until next week to start, we put him back on the pepcid now, and we'll just adjust the "on" and "off" periods.

I am giving him aloe vera juice (George's - not organic (which is very bitter), but no preservatives). One teaspoon twice a day. It's best given alone, on an empty stomach, but he doesn't drink water, let alone plain aloe vera juice. :lol3:

Wonderful news! Did she have any idea what may have caused it?

No, not really. Could have been coughing due to a hairball. This incident did happen in the morning, so perhaps he ruptured a blood vessel coughing just shortly before I was up.

Her main point was that it was a one-time thing. If it were happening more frequently, it would concern her (obviously). But Lazlo's mom needs to keep things in perspective. ;) :lol3:

It did happen once before - but that was a string of fresh blood that was ON a hairball he did get up - that happened in September. So it's not happening with any frequency. If there were any persistent bleed, it would show up as anemia, which clearly isn't an issue (now, knock wood). :heart2:

:woohoo: :jump: for joy!!! So far so good on the initial test and a big :cross: :cross: for the rest to come in excellent too. Very relieved about this, sweetie!! :D :hugs:

p.s. :hugs: Keeping things in perspective is tough given what you have been through with precious Lazlo this last year and a half, so a little worrying on momma's part is to be expected!! :bigwink: :hugs:  and on us aunties part too. :winkblue:

"Instead pink bile with a small clot of blood (dark, not bright red) came up"

Sounds like it could be the start of esophageal varices.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000268.htm

Have they investigated him for that?

I once had a patient at work who was vomiting pink/red blood with clots.  It started off small, but got worse the more she threw up.  The residents were investigating all kinds of things and I kept saying that they needed to do a GI consult because red blood from the mouth is usually coming from above the stomach. It was hours later and several units of packed red blood cells, before they finally did a GI consult and it was found that the woman had Esophageal Varices.

Now, it could be nothing more than a broken capillary from hacking, which then started to clot before he started to hack again.  But IMHO it's worth getting it looked into to make sure that there isn't something more going on.

That's fascinating Linda, thank you VERY much for that! I don't know that we'll explore it now, but I'll have the vet make a note of it in the file so we don't forget about it. He did throw up blood with a hairball back in September. These seem to be isolated -and he's not at all anemic; nor is he even vomiting frequently (knock wood). He rarely vomits up anything these days, let alone bile (again, knock wood). Of course, with his history, I'm just on high alert.

The vet called today with the results of his blood work: "perfect." So nothing chronic seems to be happening. :) ( :cross: :lol3: )

So glad to hear the bloodwork was perfect. I'm sure you're so relieved that everything points to a temporary irritation.
