I have heard of antihistamines being used on cats but I would have no idea of the dosage, especially for a kitten. Plus, you can't be sure it's allergies. This sounds pretty severe if she's doing it day and night. It could be asthma. Is she an indoor/outdoor kitty? I'm not sure why mowing the grass would affect her so strongly if she was indoor only. Could you try to keep her confined to one room with the window closed and see if that helps?

I think you know that it would be best for her to see a vet. Please call and see if there are any low cost clinics near you, or if any vets will give you a payment plan. There's also the Care Credit program.

Here is a link you might find useful, which includes a link to carecredit.  I agree wholeheartedly that this sounds pretty serious and if at all possible she should probably be seen by a vet.  Coughing and gasping for air are also signs of a heart condition. Could be related to allergies, but I wouldn't want to risk it
