Recently, my female cat, Gracie, has started to do something she's never done before...She slowly shakes her rear end from side to side with her tail straight up and slightly fluffed...She's been fixed so she's not spraying...She's very content and even seems as if she's prancing...Does anyone have any idea why she may be doing this?

Thanks!!!

I don't think I've heard of something like this. Does she do it at a certain time or place? Is there any pattern to it al all? Do her hind quarters seem fine otherwise? She's moving and jumping okay? She's eating, eliminating, playing normally?

They do this when they are happy. Though also when they are spraying. Spayed cats can spray, mine does though he is male. Females can spray too even if neutered. Also cats will spray if they have urinary irritation, both my male and female have been through that, both spayed. The spray small amounts of urine sometimes bloody all over the house. But they are not happy, they are uncomfortable and trying to relieve the painful burning. It is like cystitis in humans. If there is no urine don't worry abut it.

It does sound like she's spraying. If she actually does spray, you'd definitely know about it, but they can just go through the motions too. It must be an instinctual thing. Both my cats are neutered, but one does still spray. Thank goodness he only does it outside to mark his territory. The other one will occasionally do the prancing motions like you've described. He seems to do this when he's excited or happy.

My neutered male does this too, we call it 'pretend spraying'. I do hope that this is what it always will stay too! My other neutered male DOES spray, thank goodness outside now, but when we first moved here he did the doors inside. He started out with 'pretend spraying' too.

I have a male and female that do this (both are fixed), neither have ever sprayed. The female does it much more often than the male does. Oddly enough, the 6 lb female is dominant over the boys (13 and 18 lbs). No spraying from any of them, the shaky thing seems to be out of happiness.

My old Grey girl (RIP) did it too.

Thanks for all of your comments!!!  I'm thinking she's just doing this when she's happy and just " showing off".  Her hind quarters are fine and she's eating well.  No problem with eliminating her waste either. She's the "Queen" of the pets...and the boss of our 106 lb dog, Rosco.

Thanks again!!!
