Midday I saw Mist, my 17 year old gray lady, straining to defecate. I didn't time her but it was longer-than-usual, and unproductive. She moaned, stepped out of the litter box, regurgitated what lunch she had eaten, then back into the litter box but again without results.

Called the vet who said to come in right away before she went out on farm calls. (At first they said to drop her off and she'd be checked when there was time. But I knew how upset Mist would be at that.)

Vet gloved up, lubed a finger and checked but her colon was empty. He anal glands, however, were massively full. It came out like a strand of well cooked chocolate spaghetti.

We were sent home with 4 syringes of lactulose, each with a pre-measured dose. Two today, two tomorrow. One dose as soon as we were home. And this afternoon we had POOP.

Called the vet and we'll do two today, one tomorrow, one Friday.

Oh, and the other thing I need you to send good wishes for? Mr. Poe has apparently decided that if the carrier is out he might be next. Have not seen him since noon, not even for dinner. I'm sure he's not outside as neither of the boys are door dashers, have never been outside except for vet visits.

But I really do wish he'd show his pretty golden eyed black face and let me tell him all is well, he's not going anywhere right now.

He's back! Those TCS vibes are fantastic!

From whatever alternate universe he disappeared into, Mr. Poe came strolling back out. Ate his dinner, but a little jumpy - kept lifting his head and peering around.

Mist is still looking a little "troubled" in her litter pan. But she ate her dinner and I still need to give her the second dose of lactulose. Will check for deposits before I go to bed.

Keep those good vibes coming because it is clear that they work, really well.

do you have space to leave the carrier out with the door open? this way they wont get upset if you have to use it. Just throw a towel over it and it becomes an extra place they can lie in.

This is a good idea and one I do. Their carrier is always out and open, though mine do not use it at all, it does make them less fearful of it. So when the need arises I have no trouble getting them into it and they are actually more comfortable in it when they have to go anywhere. Like they are in a piece of home.
