My hubby has anxiety about giving our cats catnip. He's so cute with his overprotectiveness!! Are there any bad effects that can happen from catnip? Is it 100% safe? I think it is, but he is convinced that it is bad for them. Thanks in advance!

OH MY! Mittens get catnip all the time. He loves it! I think it puts them in a good mood and destresses them, like drinking green tea for us...I see my vet give their cats catnip. So, in my opinion...I don't think there is any harm in it.

That's not true about people not selling stuff because it is harmful to cats. But catnip is not harmful. It can in some cats cause aggression because it over stimulates them, and in other cats it doesn't even affect them. It depends on the cat and the body chemistry. Just give a tiny pinch at first to gauge the reaction and go from there. And now go and make your hubby a nice cup of catnip tea, it WILL calm him down! LOL

I agree hissy, I think people do sell things that are harmful to cats. Though it's a rare side effect, I wouldn't want my cats getting aggressive. Maybe I will steer clear of it, anywaym, what they don't know can't hurt them and they can't want something that they don't know exists!

I would test it out if I were you.It really does help some cats to relax. Out of my crew of 20 the only one who gets real aggressive is one of the barn cats, I have 5 that don't even give catnip a second look.

All right I did't say it right! If the goverment thought it would hurt cat's and people, you would have to buy it like you would drugs.(pot) ect.Yes I know there are people who would sell you anything to make a buck.I grow catnip plants and all my cats love it.And has never hurt any of them.

The first thing that sprang to my mind regarding harmful products that are allowed to be sold was Hartz flea drops. Those things are poison, and they're all over the place!

As far as catnip, yes, it's completely safe. I've seen a couple reactions to it; mostly kitties get real silly and start rolling around and stuff, but there was one cat that started bopping her buddy on the nose after getting a whiff.

This is so true. I found out the hard way!
A couple of weeks ago I gave the Princess some catnip and she went bonkers and bit me hard on the wrist. It even bled a little bit. Because of the bad reaction she had to it, I have to be careful about even giving it to the other cats (so Peaches can't get any of it).

When Carmella gets catnip, she gets very lovey, playful and friendly. Catnip doesn't seem to affect Henrietta that much either way! So like us peeps... they each react differently!

For the most part my kittens seem to ignore the catnip. On very rare occassions I will find Aragorn beating the crap out of his catnip in a sack.
Then he just falls alseep.

Amber doesnt really show any effects. One catnip bag was destroyed in two days though. That must have been some GOOD nip!

Socks has one of those corner head scratches (they're like $4 at Wal-Mart) basically, it's like a brush that you mount to your wall and your kitty can scratch her head (though Socks scratches her back on it). Anyway, my point (yeah, I have a point in this long drawn out story) is that the bottom of it is filled with kitty nip. Socks LOVES it. It makes her a lovey little purrball...rolling all over the place.

I grow catnip for my cats. They both love it. If I go out on the porch, they hang out in the nearest window, cause they know I usually pick some and give it to them. They both roll in it and then they crash out. The cat I used to have would get hyper, but never aggressive. A small dose at first is best.
