I'm new so sorry if this isn't in the right place. I was wondering what your thoughts were on health insurance for cats and if its worth the cost? Also for those of you who do have it, who do you have a policy with and do you like it/feel its worth it?

I don't have insurance on my three. I had a large bill a couple of months ago when Rosie had to have surgery and bloods taken which came to approx £400 ($700?), but fortunately l have the finances to cover it.

Rosie's my eldest (11)   so i've been lucky that this is the only time there's been anything big done on either of them

As a student my finances are not as secure. I could afford $40 a month for insurance if I budgeted for it. But if something came up like $700 I couldn't cover it alone. I'm wondering if at their age (1 year and 7 months) if I should just put money in savings each month for vet bills, or just pay the $250 a year for insurance. It covers up to $250 each in preventive care, vaccines, and check ups so it pays for it's self. But there is a $100 deductible. Still, by just having their check ups and shots every year it would pay for its self. It may be better then saving aside $500 a year for vet bills, then using that all and having a accident or illness. I don't qualify for them medical credit so if I didn't have the money I would be in trouble. If I had the insurance I would have a safety net incase of an emergency.

I'm curious if anyone on here has insurance and any feed back on it and what company they are with.

There are quite a few members here who have insurance for their kitties. I know that Carolina, in particular, has given her insurance policy quite a workout! :lol3: And she's very satisfied, I believe her company is www.petsbest.com. If she doesn't see this thread and post about it, you could PM her for more details.

You can get a plan that covers routine care but it's not cost-effective. Better to get one for illnesses and injuries only. Look at a LOT of different plans and coverage options, so that you find the one that's best for your situation; don't just accept the first one you see without looking into everything.

One thing about pet insurance is that you still need to pay the vet up front. So keep a savings account or credit card free for that purpose; once the insurance company reimburses you, you can pay off the credit card or replenish the savings account.

I have a question related to all of this.

Does everyone tell the truth about their pet's past health history?  I mean, they ask if they have prior health issues and of course, the rates go up if so.  But, do they check actually check on this?

My older one had one UTI several years ago but is relatively healthy overall.  The UTI wasn't due to an underlying health problem, it was a one shot deal.

When I looked into pets best insurance they only asked if my cats had any health issues within the last 12 months or any ongoing conditions. I doubt 1 UTI would make it go up seeing as all cats are so predisposed to UTI's they probably just figure that into the base cost. You can get free quotes on most of the plans, you could always put the info in and see what the cost is.
