So I come home from work today, and Mr. Fluffytail is waiting for me on the steps outside, as usual.

I sat down for a moment to scratch his head and say hello, and along comes my neighbor, walking her two dogs.

The first dog was not really much of a concern; a little Yorkie or something similar, half the size of kitty, that was off the leash and happily ambling around. Kitty hardly even looked at him.

The second dog was a different story. A young, strong boxer that looked to weigh at least 80lbs, this dog wanted to eat my cat for dinner. I know this, because her owner told me! As the boxer strained at her leash, the owner announced, "Sorry, my dog wants to eat your cat for dinner." Thank God that one was leashed!

So what does my cat do? Run inside through the cat door? Run away? Get the h*ll outta there like any sensible cat would do? No way... he sits on the steps, locks eyes with the dog, and enters into a stare-down with this huge boxer!!!

I couldn't believe my eyes! I was thinking, "are you CRAZY? Why would you EVER mess with a big dog like that?!!!"

At this, of course the dog starts yowling and growling and pulling at the leash. Stare-downs are serious business in both the feline and canine communities! At this point the owner says, "Come on honey, let's get inside before the leash breaks again."

o_O!

So what does my kitty do at this point? Walks BEHIND ME, settles into pounce position, and continues the stare-down! I'm sure he felt nice and safe with me as a buffer between him and that huge dog! Anyone ever hear that story about the two guys who meet the bear? He doesn't have to outrun the bear, he just has to outrun the other guy, right?

So, of the five mammals involved in this situation, I decided to be the most reasonable. I took control, went inside and told kitty to get upstairs.

He was walking around for a few minutes with his tail as fat as my calf after that one!

Can you believe the nerve? What cat stares down a huge dog like that?

My cat would, and did, do that! Banshee was the Queen of the house; she was our Queen B. When we took her to the vet, we'd get her inside and open the door to the cat carrier. Out she'd come and she'd sit on my lap with her head held as high as it could be. If dogs would come over to her, even big dogs, she simply sat there and stared them all down. Her fur wouldn't even bristle....they were beneath her.
Believe me, you didn't want to be on the receiving end of those green eyes of hers!

Some cats will do this, but the only bad thing is that it usually means they will hold their ground and fight. I had a female that did this and she usually did run the much bigger dogs off, but what happens if they tangle with a real killer? I don't think it would be a good outcome for the cat. That dog owner was not very nice when they did not try to correct the dog! It even sounds like they wanted something to happen. I think I would keep an eye on the situation! I love that your cat stood her ground, but be careful please!

I got my first cat when I was 5.  She was a Siamese, and my best friend for 18 years.  We lived in a small town, and she was an indoor /outdoor cat.  There were no dogs on our street....she did not allow it.  If one of any size was so foolish as to attempt to walk down the street....they only did it once.  I saw her ride a german shepherd down the block....the dog was screaming the whole way.  When they passed the boundaries of "her territory", she jumped off the dog and calmly came back home.  I always felt sorry for the cocker spaniel that lived in the next block.  Our street ran into his garage door (like a T).  She terrorized that poor dog...wouldn't let him leave his garage if she was out.

The owner did correct her dog, but she didn't seem to be very good at it. Regardless, my kitty knows how to take care of himself ;)

Yeah, some cats think they are 9 feet tall and bullet proof.

My RB cat, Fred was fearless. I heard a dog growling in my yard, then cat yowling and screeching. I ran out the door, expecting to find Fred pieces. No, he was on the back of the neighbor's Chow, claws dug in, riding it like a cowboy down the driveway. He was a little fellow, never weighed over about 8 lbs in his life.
