pinkman here,

I have been wanting to put more variation to my cat's food and I was wondering if you guys had any experience with the Weruva Cats in the Kitchen cans. Are they very gravy-based like the regular Weruva cans? Or are they more meaty, like Tiki Cat's Puka Puka?

Any flavors to look into, or avoid?

Thanks!

I've never bought Tiki, but the Cats in the Kitchen is way more substantial than the other Weruva.

My cats love all of them, wish I could afford to feed them daily, but I can't.

Yeah, I tried Steak Frites from the regular Weruva line but I was really disappointed on how much "meat" was actually in the cat. Baw.

I'm assuming you meant "In the can" not "in the cat"

Yea, there isn't a lot of food in those cans at all, but, very good quality and really appealing to my older one especially.  When he was ill recently, and was losing his appetite, we couldn't get him to eat nearly anything for several days.  The vet suggested Instinct beef and he nearly lost it just smelling it lol.  But, the Paw Licking Chicken by Weruva was exactly what he wanted.  He loves regular people chicken, and it has the texture I know he enjoys.  Just not enough of it in a can.  For a few days, it was worth feeding it to him to get his energy back up and interested in eating again but I just can't see making it part of our rotation, especially with 2 cats.

LOL! Meat in the cat.
I

You should try Tiki Cat's Puka Puka Luau if you can! It's like Paw Lickin Chicken but more meat! I swear when I opened the can it bursted.

I love Tiki Cat and Weruva. I love Tiki because it is so meaty, it really fills them up, and Weruva for all the moisture and real meat too. If they were less expensive they would eat these brands more often.

Well...NONE of my cats would touch Tiki
.  I found it to be extremely dry.  Yes, there was a lot of meat in the cans, but virtually NO liquid,  Plus I had purchased a variety case of Tiki, so it's not like they only had one flavor to sample.

I have not tried the new Weruva Cats in the Kitchen in cans, although was surprised to see them, since they sell them in pouches.  I did try the pouches a year or so back.

If you want really meaty, have you thought about raw?  That's what we do now.  When we were trying our the canned stuff, it's when we were converting from kibble to canned in order to get everyone on a schedule to convert to raw.  Now THAT's meaty
(There's a whole forum on it...a sub-forum of this one
)

I have thought about raw, but I honestly don't have space to prepare it or have the time to really make my own. I also have been looking for a butcher around my area, but all we got is fresh produce!
I was thinking about maybe ordering some Radcat or Feline's Pride, but the cost of dry ice to ship is intense.

I actually put warm water whenever I feed her wet food, even the Tiki. In the mornings I also drizzle krill oil.

Krill oil is good! I use it too.
(but don't use lack of space as an excuse for not doing raw if you're thinking about it...one raw feeder only has a table top freezer, and she manages
I think her freezer is the size of a shoebox...well maybe the size of a boot box
.  PLUS, she lives in NY, and she feeds Radcat.  I think she has a source where she buys it locally.  There ARE stores that sell it so you don't have to have it shipped.  Not in every state, but definitely in NY.  As far as commercially prepared, nutritionally complete, Radcat is probably the best!)

If I were to go ahead and feed Rad Cat do you rotate different protein sources often?

As with anything, it's best to provide variety. :) Though it is best to introduce new raw proteins slowly.

Sally, you didn't mention me with the space issue! I live in a 38' RV for goodness sake - with 8 indoor-only cats, and I feed homemade raw. :lol3: I DID have to buy a small chest freezer that we keep outside on a platform, covered in a tarp. :)

FYI, you can feed up to 15% of their diet unbalanced - meaning just plain old raw meat. Makes it really easy. And even with that little bit, they'll see some of the benefits of having the raw in their diet.

FYI, the Rad Cat, even shipped, is a much better deal than the Feline's Pride. Feline's Pride shipping is completely insane.

In fact - there IS an option that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. It's called Hare Today. Even Sally (mrsgreenjeens) gets it shipped to AZ! And they're located in Western PA. Shipping to NW NJ is usually around $24 for a 45 pound box. The time involved would be dethawing (which I do a couple of 2 pound "chubs" at a time) - and then portioning the ground into meal-sized portions. I feed 8 cats - between them they eat 11 ounces at one meal. So I don't bag individual portions, I bag 11 ounces at a time. Smoosh the baggie flat, and re-freeze. Really doesn't take much time at all. And if you want it complete and balanced, you just mix in a premix, Alnutrin, before you bag it up in portions. It's sold at the site. But they have pretty much anything you can think of as ground whole animal. I provide my cats mostly prey model raw, but they do get 4 meals a week of whole ground animal. The ground frozen raw I feed is rabbit, goat, llama, and pork. This is the site: http://www.hare-today.com

:)

Yeah, good info. Honestly, I have a lot going on right now on my plate. I can go into detail, but this thread is not the place to do so.

I think for now I'll add some raw meat chunks to Lox's diet. I used to feed her chicken necks every other day actually, hopefully Thursday I can go downtown to pick some up if I am feeling alright enough.

Thanks.

Aw, no need to explain. :hugs:

It's just information - file it for future use.

...and you got the answer to your question. :) Hope Lox enjoys having a new food in rotation. :rub:

Question about the shipping on these items.  If you're not home to receive the shipment, what do you do about that?

I leave for work at 7am, don't get home until well after 7pm.  Would it be save outdoors all those hours?  Is the frozen actually packed well enough?

My porch gets intense sun hitting it late in the day.

I just can't believe it's possible for it not to melt

In peak summer, it could be a problem. But the boxes fit 50 pounds. If you ordered 40 or 45 pounds of stuff, you could just ask for some extra ice packs. We always chose 2-day shipping, and sometimes the box had to sit out for a few hours before we were back to pick it up. There was never any significant defrosting. At times like that, I just took the few packages that were partly dethawed, and put them in the fridge to dethaw enough to portion up and refreeze.

If you like chicken wings, throw her the wing tips. Also, gizzards are cheap. Nice chewy snack that helps keep her teeth clean.
