I hurt my back at work a few weeks ago, and have been having such horrid pain. My entire back from my neck to my butt has been aching severely and feeling like it was on fire. And when I bend my arms, they get instant pins and needles and a deep throbbing pain from fingers to shoulder.
The new clinic that I am doing at work on Wednesday is the cause. It's a super busy clinic (one of the top 3 busiest) with lots of running around, standing and bending, and very little time to sit. My back cannot tolerate that pace. I ended up missing 2 days of work last week, and another 2 days of work this week. I've spoken to the manager about it and they gave me some help in the clinic this past Wednesday, so my back isn't as sore this weekend as it has been.
It's still not great, but I'm not bed ridden like I have been.
Anyway, I finally got around to taking out my own garbage today, using my shopping cart. My neighbour has been doing it for the last few weeks. And I managed to get a few loads of laundry done using my own portable washer in my apartment. It hasn't been easy. I spend much of the time wheeling around in my office chair, and carting laundry from the washer to my spare bedroom where the dryer is, using the small shopping cart.
Tomorrow I'm hoping to be able to clean the bathroom (again while sitting in my chair), and to vacuum my bedroom (mostly sitting on the side of the bed).
Monday I'm going to the doctor to get a letter of physical restrictions (as per my Manager). This way they will be able to pull me out of that clinic and give me a different assignment without setting a precident (sp?) where nurses demand to be removed from their assignment because they don't like the work.
For me, I like the work in this clinic, but I can't physically keep up the pace of it. The doctor is very inflexible. Basically work gets in the way of his social life. He refuses to do extra clinics to accommodate patients; instead he insists that they all be put into his clinic on this one afternoon per week. And he refuses to stay overtime, so he expects the clinic to finish on time. On April 3rd, I saw 31 patients in a 3 hour period! He saw about 20 of those patients. And it was close to the same numbers again on April 10th. He is away this coming week, and again on May 8th. There are 24 patients total scheduled for those 2 afternoon clinics. Instead of booking a "make up clinic" another day to put those patients into, he insisted that we move those 24 patient's between 2 clinics, which are already double booked. I told our clerk to book them in over a period of 4 or 5 clinics instead of 2 clinics.
