My cat is losing small patches of fur on his belly

I posted about my kitty Pumpkin about a month ago.  He's a stray I took in a few months ago, and he went to the vet, had his shots and was treated for tapeworm.  The tapeworm medication worked and I haven't seen any of those things since.  He's also been treated for hariballs and constipation w/Laxatone.

The vet believes my cat is about 3-4 years old.  He's strictly an indoor kitty, and now that Spring is here, he's getting more antsy.  He wants me to let him out for a run and I just won't do it.

Could the stress of wanting to be let out just about every day be the reason he's losing small amounts of fur on his belly?  It's getting to the point where he's got a couple of small bare spots, one of which looked pink and felt dry in the middle.  He won't let me take a closer look.

This seems to be happening on the part of his belly that hangs down.  Pumpkin looks like he's got a pot belly, but the vet wasn't concerned about it.  She doesn't want him gaining any more weight though.

I'm positive that Pumpkin has no fleas, but at times I'll see him scratch at both ears and under his chin.  So far he hasn't lost any fur in those spots.

Pumpkin has been acting funny as of late.  I think it's because I won't let him out.  He's been known to meow loudly and run from one end of the apartment to the other (it's an efficiency).  He likes to explore forbidden areas, like the tall cupboard in the main room and has been known to hide out in my tub (when it's empty, of course).

Not only that, I'm just getting over the stomach bug and am feeling the stress of getting ready for our move on May 1st.  I'm having a colonoscopy next week.  Could it be that my cat is being affected by the stress I am under?  Is that why he's losing small patches of fur?

Other than what I just mentioned, Pumpkin seems to be doing fine.  He eats and drinks.  His poop seemed firmer than usual tonight and he strained, but not nearly as bad as before.  I started him back on the Laxatone this morning.

Do you have any ideas as to why Pumpkin is losing small patches of fur?  I've been finding small patches here and there, normally the size of a dime to a quarter.  Two or three at least each day, sometimes more.

If it's stress-related, I wonder what impact the move will have on him.   I plan on doing this in two stages - most everything on day 1, so that putting boxes away and setting up furniture won't bother him.  He will come with me, of course, on day 2.

Btw, he does NOT like to ride in vehicles.  Whenever he goes to the vet, Pumpkin will meow rather loudly.

Help!

P.S.  Since I wrote this post, Pumpkin jumped on my bed and reclined near me, so I was able to get a closer look at one of his bare spots.  It was  pinkish with what looked like a pimple in the middle.  When I touched it he seemed annoyed.  Maybe he's over-grooming himself?

Is Pumpkin Neutered? If not, he wants out to mate and is getting fusturated.

The other thing I can think of is allergies.. can can get springtime allergies like the rest of us.

I'd suggest bringing him back to the vet for them to look at the spots and rule out anything else like ringworms.

I am assuming he is neutered too? I would be thoroughly taken back if not and the vet suggests letting him run outside! :( I think I remember in your other thread you saying he was already neutered. Sounds to me like Pumpkin is over-grooming as the tummy is where it usually begins. Stress is the cause. BUT - if he is scratching a lot then it could be fleas that you are not seeing. Did Pumpkin get a dose of Frontline or Revolution from the vet? The bare spots on his tummy with the pink pimple in the middle could very well be his nipples and he just happens to be pulling out the hair in that area. If you can post a picture that would help too. Of course, if this continues, I would see about getting him back into the vet for another look. Hopefully the vet will only charge you minimally for a re-check. You could then at that time ask the vet for something to calm him during your move to help with his stress level. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: for Pumpkin! and, :hugs: for taking him in. :hugs:

Pumpkin was neutered and his front paws were declawed.  To this day I don't understand why his previous owner went to the expense of having that done, only to abandon him.  Even the vet said as much.

He had a thorough checkup, and the last time he went to the vet's was about a month ago, so I'm pretty sure it's not ringworm.  I found small tufts of fur here and there in my apartment, but on his belly there are only two bare spots,  Not very big at all.  Today he hasn't lost much fur at all.  He does shed alot.  You should have seen how much I got when I combed him down today, which normally he doesn't like me to do.

I was told that this is the season for cats to shed more.  Since these spots are on his belly that hangs closest to the floor, I figured it was friction from rubbing as he walked?  The carpet here isn't in the best condition and the landlord is too cheap to replace it or fix other things here.  That's one of the reasons I'm moving.  I've got allergies to dust, mold, pollen, etc.  This place even has carpeting in the bathroom for crying out loud.  I asked them to take it out and nothing was ever done.

If this is allergy-related, perhaps moving will help alleviate the problem, as long as it's related to something in this apartment.

I don't think that my kitty likes alot of changes.  Today I had a large box arrive with a table set I ordered for our new home.  I had to re-arrange everything here, which took awhile and I had to change where his food and water dishes are, not to mention one of his sleeping spots.  He didn't seem very happy.

I could imagine what moving day will be like for him.  I hope that the stress of it all won't prolong this problem with the fur.

for Pumpkin! and,
for taking him in.
This is going to sound like a stupid question:  Can male cats have nipples?  I never noticed before.  I will take another look next time he allows me to do so.  The bare spots on his belly are towards his backside, probably just a few inches from it.

I'm not seeing the tufts of fur on the rug that I've been seeing the past couple of days, so perhaps it's getting better.  Then again, we had some "fun" this afternoon with my having to re-arrange things because of a large box that arrived.  I don't think he liked that.

The vet thoroughly checked him for fleas.  I check his ears and didn't notice any crusting, odor, leaking or whatever.  And yet he will scratch at his ears and his chin.  His chin looks fine too.  Could it be the dry air in my home?  I'm hoping the next apartment won't have that issue.   It's certainly in much better shape than this place.

Pumpkin deserves a better home and I feel bad that for the past few months, he's had to put up with the rotten conditions in this building.  But it's better than nothing. I think we both will be much happier once we're settled into our new home.

If this keeps up I'll take him back to the vets.

I love my little darling!  If I had a decent camera I'd post a photo, but it will have to wait until after the move.

Yes male cats have nipples

Our male cats are actually more noticeable than our female kitties.  For whatever reason.

I tried to take another look but Pumpkin didn't appreciate the idea.   I picked him up and got a small flashlight, just to get a better look and he squirmed too much (had him belly up in my arms...funny thing is, he usually likes that position when he's giving me tons of kisses).  Then I tried again when he was relaxing on the floor.  He objected, but this time he gave me head butts.  Weird....

Do heat butts mean different things to cats?  I thought it normally means a sign of affection.  Maybe this time it meant something different?  Why wouldn't he let me look at it?

How many nipples do male cats have?  I know, another stupid question, but I'm still a fairly new cat mommy.  Other than this issue, he's acting good.  Good appetite, litterbox habits, etc.  Loves to play. Still less tufts of fur on the floor than yesterday, so I'm hoping this is getting better....whatever it is.

No question is stupid.
I think males have 6 nipples. My males 2 lowest (closest to his bum) are the most prominently seen. I can't see the others even when he rolls on his back and stretches for a tummy rub. I'd just watch those areas for any sign that the patches are getting bigger. If not, then he is probably just shedding, if they do, then get him vet checked. Good luck with the move! Put a little feliway on a towel in his carrier when move day comes. May make him a bit calmer.

No stupid questions here on TCS!! :hugs: Never. All questions are excellent and usually there are many others wondering the same thing. :bigthumb: Male cats have the same as female. Both have 8. Two rows of four. I have seen some with 10 though!!! More vibes for your kitty! And ask away, that is what we are all here for. ;)

Hi there! Pumpkin sounds alot like my little guy, Hooligan! Down to the very bits of constipation and hair balls! He also has a problem with hair loss, but he loses hair above his eyes and on his nose.

I brought him to the vet a couple weeks ago an he said that it was stress related. I changed my work schedule and Hooligan, a very loving and affectionate kitty, has been stresses from the change. Is Pumpkin a mama's boy? Maybe he IS feeling your sickness? I have pneumonia and although I've been home more often, hooligan has lost some whiskers. They are smart and sensitive little guys

If the spots on his tummy are equal distance apart, I would assume they are nipples. Especially if you don't see his over-grooming yourself.
Just wait for him to take a cat nap belly up and then sneak over and have a look :p

That must be it.  Those two spots on his belly are close to his backside.  I thought one looked like a nipple but didn't know if I was seeing things or not!  lol  :

He hasn't lost any tufts of fur today.  A little while ago after we both got up from a nap, he started acting like he was going to hurl.  It didn't last long because he's back to normal.  Eating, drinking, playing, pooping, etc.

What's "feliway?"  I never heard of it.

Thanks!

Eight nipples?  Makes me wonder why.  It's not like he's going to nurse kittens or something!  lol.

This will have to be one of the questions I'll ask the Lord when the time comes.

Thank you!

Pumpkin is very much a "Mama's boy."  Sometimes I think he doesn't like it when I go out, whether it's to the dumpster to put  out trash, or taking the bus to run errands for a few hours.  I put out the trash a short time ago and sat on the other end of the porch, enjoying the beautiful weather.  I could hear him meow....so I hurried back.  He always meows like crazy when I get back from errands, or even when I get back to the main room in this apartment from a long bath.  Maybe it's something he went through before I got him?  I don't think I want to know details about that.  It's bad enough that his previous owner abandoned him.

I believe he could feel my sickness.  I'm just about recovered, but I remember when I had dry heaves the first day and he was sitting there watching me.  I felt bad as I don't want him to worry.  Then there's the stress of moving.  I'm still trying to figure out how to get all the furniture I need beforehand, who's going to take me, etc.  And I have a colonoscopy on Thursday, which won't be fun.  The move is a week after that, so there's alot going on at once.

I think that once this is all over, Pumpkin and I will feel much better!  Btw, Pumpkin looses whiskers periodically.  It used to be two whiskers a week when I first got him, but now it's one every couple of weeks or so.

They seem to be an equal distance apart.  I'll try to take a close look again.  The last time I did that, he objected.  I'll just have to be sneaky!  lol

Well male humans have nipples too, so it's not all that strange, is it? ;)

True, but I wonder why male cats have them?  Esp. that many?  What would they use them for?
