I remember my mother growing cukes that grew upward on a trellis rather than laying in the dirt and spreading wide. They were so good.  i have a little plot of land that I have reserved and have to share with my other appt neighbors. I have been looking for  a cuke that grows up. They were called "burpless".  (?) If any one knows what I mean please tell me what I need to shop for?

Question number 2. I have  Catnip seeds. Can I start them indoors?  Have any of you done this?

TY for any green thumb advice you can give.

I grow all my cucumbers up a fence, they do a lot better this way then on the ground. All varieties should vine and grow upwards. Burpless kinds are in all the seed catalogs, you might go on the internet to see what kinds are available in the stores. I grew catnip once, just started it outside on the edge of my garden, then discovered it was the same 'mint' plant I had beeen pulling as a weed! Now I pay attention and my cats are always rubbing on this weed!

Catnip is easy to grow, you can put the seeds in some peat or soil in a pot indoors to get them started, just keep them damp. Our cats will eat the shoots so I have to keep the pots away from them until they are established, after that they munch on the plants and keep them trimmed.

I don't plant catnip outdoors because all the cats in town will come to roll around in it, and we have one indoor/outdoor who defends her territory. Don't want to import cats for her to fight off!

I had my cucumbers growing up a trellis last year and it was working till they got some kind of weekly disease. It took out my cantaloupe too before I figured out what to do. It was only my second year with a garden.

Wow, that's a great picture! Our tomato plants never get that hight!

We grew our cuke plants around the outer perimeter of our garden and trained them to grow up the fence. Like Mooch, though, we ended up with some kind of cucumber blight last year and we ended up having to tear out all of the cucumber plants. I was sad....no cucumbers means no pickles.

I don't know if we're even going to try them again this year. When we go to the nursery, we're going to ask them what we can do for blight, other than not growing them in the same area of the garden. We even tried a chemical that was supposed to fight it, but they were too far gone.

Thank You all. That is exactly what I needed to know, and visual aids always help!  Nice pic.

i am thinking that I might get some string and sort of train them upward.  And it is a good idea to do the catnip on my patio. I totally forgot about the local feline miscreants.

Wow!  I need some help with what to get for a trellis for mine.  For my peas also.  It's one of those things where I'd rather just buy something than have to figure out how to make it (not much time to spend fiddling around...).  DH is actually installing my new raised beds today!

Go to Home Depot or the equivalent and look there.  Or a big nursery.  I'm sure you could find something that is just perfect.
