I wonder if she would be receptive to another kitten or 2 from  a motherless litter?  That would kill 2 birds with one stone - Panda would have a buddy or 2 and hopefully it would stop the over grooming as Mama would have more kittens to worry about.

They forgot to make an appt today but still should be able to get him in this week. I am now thinking that there might be other reasons for the hair loss. I've been keeping an eye on momma, and she is not grooming him enough to warrant this hair loss. Also, his skin on his back that is now quite visible, is very dry and has a rough feel to it. There is no redness, no sores. He doesn't seem itchy. He's 3 weeks on thursday and is starting to move around more. He's a bit behind because of being a singleton and the fact that he's very chubby. I've researched but cannot find anything obvious that resembles his symptoms. Momma does not have hair loss..well she's shedding but she was an outdoor cat and is now indoors. They get quite a coat in our Canadian winters. But, she has no obvious patches of hair loss or thinning hair. (fur)

She has been in heat for almost two weeks which is driving me batty. Thankfully, no loud meowing but just talks non stop with throaty calls.

I have asked the shelter to notify me if they get any singletons in  that are close to his age. It would be nice to get him a playmate.

So, both vets were stymied. Had no idea what was going on and had never seen it before.

They advised to do a 'wait and see'. The hair appears to be breaking off more then falling off.

It's symmetrical and only on the back of his head and body. Face, belly, tail and legs are unaffected at this point.

Mom is eating Taste of the Wild grain free and I just started giving her some wet food as well but

after the hair loss started.

I don't think it could be an issue with food. It may have been an over grooming issue that weakened the hair which then fell out a little at a time.

Who knows really, but if the vets are stumped...

Just an update on Panda's hair loss. It's the weirdest thing I've ever seen. (I seem to get the weird ones!)

His fur is def growing back in. But...it's a white/grey colour. He still has scattered black long hairs but the new

is thick and a totally different colour. It's like he's "blown" his coat.

Anyone ever seen this? I'll post some pics soon.

Yes, I did some research and it does look like fever coat. But he has not been sick, that I have noticed. The symptoms started when he was about 10 days old.

However, it does say that sometimes it will happen if mom was sick or very stressed. This momma was a stray who was brought into the shelter. Her milk was already in at that time. I took her home the same day and she gave birth two days later. Perhaps..it's from the stress she was under?

Will it go back to black?

If I'm not mistaken; sickness, stress for mom, or mom being sick can all cause a fevercoat. As long as the little guy is healthy he's fine, and his coat will straighten out in a few months.

It wasn't from over grooming after all. He had a fever coat and all his black fur broke off and it grew in the smoky grey. Supposedly, it will go back to black. We will see :)
