mr. max seems to use the toilet pretty frequently.  he's almost 8 months old, neutered almost 3 weeks ago.  has dry food out all day for grazing and also gets 6 oz. of wet per day.  he poos probably twice a day (the smell is just RIDICULOUS).  he is also a gassy little guy.  he's also trying to get over a URI he contracted from the foster home/post-surgery (still sneezing and has eye discharge).

eats BG dry and wellness wet.  doesn't seem to mind water; doesn't appear that he's drinking more than would be normal.

Welcome to the site!!! ;) Do you mean your kitten is peeing a lot in the litter box? Two poops a day is normal. If your kitten is peeing often and in small amounts then he could have a urinary tract infection and would need to have a urinalysis done at the vet. Do you use a clumping litter? That would help because then you could keep watch on the size of the clumps and frequency. The stinky poop could be from something in his diet causing him digestive problems. Please feel free to post a thread in our Nutrition Forum http://www.thecatsite.com/f/64/cat-nutrition to ask about your kitten's diet and exactly what you are feeding. Is he on an antibiotic for the upper respiratory? That could be causing some digestion issues too and will resolve once he is off the meds a few days. If you think he is not getting any better, then back to the vet he must go. All the best for you and your kitten! :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes:

hi!  yes, we've been using world's best clumping, since that's what he was used to.  (previous kitty used feline pine.)  perhaps i'm not used to how this litter clumps, so it seems like more!  he likes to use the toilet at the same time as his humans, and it appears to be a healthy amount, lol.

he's got quite the voracious appetite for a little guy.  previous kitty also had very stinky poo.  he was on antiviral treats for 2 weeks, but i think they were the cause of his day or two of diarrhea (since disappeared).

going to the vet tomorrow to have a follow up on the URI (they didn't want to do antibiotics, hoping it would clear up on its own).  this mama is a worrier :D  our kitty, theo, passed away unexpectedly 6 weeks ago from a heart attack at only 3 years old, so we're a little overly cautious at this time with our new little guy!

How often is he peeing? Are you talking 3-4 times a day or are you talking 9-10 times a day?

like 3-4, i think.  more than previous kitty.  max prefers his dry food - i've read that kibble can activate thirst and cats tend to drink more.

My cat pees about 3 times a day on average, so that seems about right as long as the pee clumps are normal-sized. You need to watch out for small pee clumps for FLUTD. The only other thing I would watch for is the sodium content in his food. Is he drinking a lot because of high sodium? Some manufacturers do add more sodium in order to increase drinking, but I do not think this is a good solution.

To me, stinky poop is a sign of a digestive problem. What are you feeding him? Kibble is dehydrating which is why cats must drink a lot of water in order to compensate. Most cats don't have a high thirst drive. It sounds like yours does. If you're interested in learning more about why kibble is not a species-appropriate food to feed, please go to www.catinfo.org.

we leave some kibble out for him, but he mostly eats wet (wellness brand/grain free).  vet advised us with previous kitten that 1 scoop of kibble + 6 oz of wet is good for growing boys.  we always mix water in with the wet for extra hydration (i call it "meat soup").  he gets greenies dental and/or hairball treats, plus we're working on teeth brushing weekly.
