hi everyone - found this site by accident. am always looking to learn something new, get advice, and share my cat experiences.

since characters are limited in the profile section, thought i would tell you more about me here.i have 8 indoor, 2 indoor/outdoor cats, and 3 outdoor ferals (TNRd). no, not a hoarder. my cats live in a nice house, eat the best cat food, and get regular vet care. my outdoor ferals get daily food/water and are retrapped annually for shots updates. when my 18 year old died i wasn't going to get another cat. i thought volunteering at the cat adoption center would fill the void. problem was i would bring home the cats that needed meds and they just never went back to be in a cage for who knew how long. i finally had to quit adoptions because i just couldn't bring home any more patients especially since i was paying for their medical bills.

my 2 indoor/outdoor cats were ferals that i recently trapped and they were supposed to go back outside but they decided they like coming in the house, so i bring them in at night.

I recently had a 12 x 17 ft screened in catio built and just finished having it tiled, plus all kinds of shelf trails, ramps and a kitty ladder installed. the cats can get to it from the dining room thru a kitty door. the room is great for me too as being screened i don't have to fight off mosquitoes.

besides lots of toys, each other and me to play with, my house backs to the woods so the cats have birds, squirrels and deer to watch. at night they watch the raccoons. i never put food on the catio so haven't had any problems with the coons so far. i only put food out for the ferals in the morning and bring it in before dark.

i buy a humongous bag of breads from the mrs. bairds outlet store for $3 - stuff that either has a small hole in the package or is outdated and can't be sold to stores, but it's all still good. the coons eat a loaf a night. i spread it out between 5 trays. anyone that's ever watch coons eat knows they aren't friendly to each other (even their own babies) when they eat and don't like to share. my theory is that if they aren't starving they will be less likely to be destructive looking for food.

there's a creek in the woods so i don't leave water out for them because they make a huge mess. i used to set up their trays on my covered patio (separate from my catio) but now i feed them way out in the yard. of course they still check the patio for food and water, but don't find anything.

next month i am going to expand my cats' world by having an outdoor screened in enclosure built in the back yard with a connecting tunnel from the catio. i will have a kitty door that will close off the tunnel so my cats will not be able to go farther than the catio at night.

Hi Augie,

How are you? I'd like to extend a warm welcome to you. I'm Allison, and just joined yesterday. My husband and I are thinking about getting a cat, so I started doing research in types of foods, toys, etc. My husband previously had a cat, but that was a long time ago. Since I have never had one, I decided to start from scratch and learn as much as I could. I found this site a few days ago. Sounds like your cats have great lives, and I love the ida of the catio.

Musically,

Allison

Hi, welcome to TCS!  I would love to see pictures of the screened in catio.  It sounds fabulous.   My crew would love something like that.
