Hi! I have another question about L-Lysine. I have a friend who has a foster kitten who's extremely ill. Here's what she IM'd to me earlier today:
We have an adoption partner who puts cats in the adoption center at work, and she's a well-meaning lady, but she's COMPLETELY overwhelmed right now, and put a VERY sick kitten in the center. It's supposed to be 10wks old min to be in the center; our vet said he's only about 7-8wks. Weighs just a pound, half what he should at that age. Emaciated to the point of muscle wasting, coccidia, URI, body-wide fungal infection, tapeworms, you name it.

He was improving after antibiotics/steroids/antiparasitics but the coccidia is on the rebound and he's very sick again.

Anyway, I pulled him from the adoption center when I saw him because [...] he had horrible bloody diarhea and was really lethargic.

He pretty much s*** nothing but blood and mucous for the first couple of days.

He's just so depleted. He has a secondary fungal infection from just being so damned unhealthy, and his hair is falling out everywhere because of it. He is on a vitamin/cal booster, getting KMR with a high-quality canned, etc. but gosh he' a mess.
She wants to try L-Lysine to help his immune system, and we were wondering, what's a good dose for a 1lb kitten?

I did a quick search and found this on one of the L-Lysine products I've seen recommended by other people. I would call the vet to double check this for sure but this is what I found. *NOTE, the info on the age of the kitten dosage on here. I do NOT know if this dosage is correct which is why I suggest talking to a vet.

http://www.healthypets.com/vetsoluviralys.html

DOSAGE: Each 322 mg (1 rounded scoop) contains approximately 250 mg of L-Lysine in a palatable base. The suggested dose for cats over 6 months of age is 1 rounded scoop given orally twice daily. The suggested dose for kittens under 6 months of age is 1/2 scoop given orally twice daily. Adjust dosage as needed. Each scoop is 1/8 tsp.

ADMINISTRATION: VIRALYS is a highly palatable powder that may be sprinkled over dry food or mixed with a small amount of canned food.

Hi LilGreenAstrid!

Here's some info on which your friend may be able to decide......

It refers to L-lysine powder, brand name Viralys Powder, which is L-lysine (in a palatable base)...and is taken from Drugs.com

Viralys Powder

Oral Powder For Cats

administration

One rounded scoop contains approximately 500 mg of L-Lysine in a palatable base. The suggested dose for cats over 6 months of age is one rounded scoop given orally twice daily. The suggested dose for kittens under 6 months of age is 1/2 scoop given orally twice daily. Adjust amount based on veterinary recommendations.

From that, a kitten less than 6 months dosage is 250mg twice daily.

I know of no side effects/warnings/cautions, neither are there any shown on Drugs.com

I don't know which "high quality canned" she's using - I'd be using Hill's a/d..........

She asked me to say thanks! The little guy has improved a lot, and she thinks it's a combination of things including the L-Lysine. He's more energetic and has gotten his appetite back and passed a lot of worms.
