Hello all...I'm new to this site and pretty much at my wit's end with my feral kitty Winslow.  We've had him 4 years and love him dearly but I cannot keep him indoors @ night.  My husband and I moved to a rural area last year and fisher cats are the problem. Since fishers have such a piercing scream we know when Winslow is in danger...it's 4/16 and already we've had 2 close calls.  I don't think he'll last the summer.  I have tried to keep him inside @ night but he will wail and throw himself against the walls and doors for hours.  At our previous home I would keep him caged outdoors on our deck during the day (when I was home) so he could have some semblance of being outside but I realized this did nothing for him.  When we finally let him out he was eventually attacked by a raccoon (we lived in a very suburban area).  Now that we're out in the country it's everything...foxes, bobcats, mountain lions, but the fishers are the worst. I'm ready to surrender him to the no-kill shelter we had in our previous area. It's breaking my heart but I'd rather see him safe than find him torn apart by something wild. Any suggestions would help.

Are you able to build him an enclosure? It needn't be anything huge - a porch you can reinforce with wire, a room where you can reinforce the window and leave it open for him, etc. Even a space in the basement with an open window might work. I can't blame you for worrying. It's dangerous out there for kitties.

I'm thinking of it...we're just concerned that no matter what the size of the enclosure is a fisher will get to him (they are not much bigger than our cat).  We do have a large enough porch space.  Thank you...it's wonderful to know that there are sites like this for support.

You would probably have to use chicken wire to keep the cat in and the weasels out. That wouldn't be too awfully expensive, especially if you do the work youself

I am almost embarrassed to say that I did not know what a Fisher Cat was exactly other than some sort of weasel. Googled them and they are really, really big and scary looking. I am all for the enclosure too. There are very strong materials that you can purchase for metal screening. I think the chicken wire might not be strong enough and I only say that because we used it for a rabbit hutch that we built. Some animal tore into the wire and the rabbit were gone. Not sure WHAT did that. Maybe chicken wire would be strong enough to keep the Fisher's out and your cat safe. Some members here have built really large enclosures and have pictures in their threads. Will see if I can dig some up for you. :vibes::vibes::vibes::vibes: for Winslow staying safe.

We used a stronger wire for our enclosure that has 2" x 4" openings. But we don't have any predators, so that works for us. We do have a racoon but Schofield screams every time he comes into the yard, so I don't think he even goes near the enclosure. I do think you will need something very strong. Keep us posted!

If "Fisher cat" is a sort of weazle, common chicken net wouldnt prob be enough. Smart and strong guys, are the weasles. And if also bigger than a fully grown cat...   I agree, you should build some nice enclosure, but be sure the net is really first rate, no hasty barely so.

I know the name of "Fisher cat"  as a real cat family, in the 20 kilogram classe?

The peculiar of them they can be tamed, almost like our own cats.

I saw a youtube film with one living in family somewhere in russia. Having hens for breakfast and being pal with the familys big moggie, 8+.

I had also read of them, in captivity the males can be help mothers, exactly like our domesticized cats.

But here we are apparently talking about something else, noted.
