as some of you know from my previous threads, it's not easy to find cattery in my country whose parents are hcm tested. but thankfully there's this cattery who is willing to arrange hcm test for their available kittens (the parents haven't been tested because the breeder believes it's enough that the grandparents were negative). so at what age can he take a swab? a website says 8 weeks minimal, another said when the kitten is weaned, another said any age. some of you might advice to stay away from this cattery but what can I do, I have to "choose the best from the worst," even if it means taking the trouble of checking a kitten before being able to take him home. thanks!

thank you, oriental slave, always so helpful

also, can anyone explain why the breeder's view that it's enough to have the grandparents tested is incorrect?

I agree with them in principle, except that unless the recording is foolproof a swab is very cheap to do, and can be combined with other tests.

I had my own breeding girl tested for PRA and what colour she is carrying for less than the cost of fiv/felv test which nearly all female cats in the UK get before going to stud.

are you saying that unless a false negative (which is rare) happened, it's enough that only the grandparents were tested?
