Hi all,

Iv recently posted on the site about adopting an abandoned kitten a week ago, he is around 7 weeks old. He seemed to settle in really well but over the past couple of days he has had quite runny poo, and he meows on his tray before he poos. And this morning he was sick a little bit, I'm worried. He is not lethargic, he was running around and playing fine after he was sick and had a poo. He has also just has a big drink of water.

However..

He was wormed the other day
We didn't know what he was been fed before with him being abandoned so he has had a quick diet change

Could any of these play a part?

Thankyou

yes, please take him to the vet first thing to be checked out. Many times parasites are a big issue and he needs to have medication from the vet. Also, what is it that you're feeding him? If it's not grain free, that's probably not helping. Grains turn to sugar and can cause diarrhea, especially in kittens.

Have you taken him to the vet yet? He should get all the tests for parasites and diseases.
This would be the best course of action.

Not sure if the worming med could cause vomiting, but I do know it's possible the new food is giving him the loose stools. They have very sensitive tummy's. But I'd feel safer with a vet saying that's all it is.

This is so very common, the symptoms you are describing from a rescue kitten. Thank you for doing so. There is a number of things going on that could be causing the diarrhea. The dewormer (what was used??? did the vet prescribe?? was the kitten's stool checked first??) and change in diet will also play a role in kitten's sensitive digestive tracts. You can pick up some Hill's W/D canned from the vet and that will firm up the stool very fast. Can be used for a few days and then slowly mixed with some kitten canned food - a brand that you plan on feeding. Also, human baby food in the jars - the plain pure meat type - will help.

Kittens can go downhill fast if you don't get the diarrhea under control. Check in with your vet right away.

Thankyou for your comments.

The vet gave me panacur to give to him over 3 days on Monday no tests were done. He's stopped vomiting now but still has loose stools and seems in less discomfort when he goes to the toilet. He's drinking plenty of water, and is still very active and playing (inbetween naps) and is eating. Iv done the scruff test and he's not dehydrated.

If he's no better stool-wise he's going to the vets tomorrow (they're closed now)

Thankyou again

OP is in the UK where stool testing isn't routine.  Panacur is the normal kitten wormer as it's well tolerated and effective against roundworms which are the type of worm that kittens get.

He sounds like he's fairly well, and I wouldn't start changing his diet right now - I'd let him settle down for a week or two, and then consider changing it slowly.

Yeah I have no plans on changing his diet anytime soon as it has just been changed from whatever it was he was getting at his other home (he was found on my brothers doorstep so don't know anything about him)

So am I right in assuming as long as he is eating and hydrated there's no need to panic?

Yes, the caveat is that kittens can go downhill very suddenly and quickly so keep a close eye on him.
