My feral cat recently had his left front leg amputated due to a massive infection.  He is scheduled to have his stitches out on Saturday.  He has been kept in a cage in the garage since this past Saturday.

My question is, how do I "introduced" him back to the outdoors?  I can not take him in the house as my fiancee is highly allergic to cats.  My fiancee's suggestion is to buy a collar and a lease and take him outside on this.  I'm not so sure about this.

I want to introduce him slowly but not sure how to do this.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Is he from your area? Can you leave the garage door up part way for a few days, then let him out in the garage? (After he's used to the open door) A couple of weeks shouldn't make him totally forget his 'area'. How is he doing? Will he be able to escape from a dog or a car in the street? Is he taming down at all, have you tried the radio or paper to maybe find him an inside home? Bless you for taking in and caring for this poor little lost soul, and good luck! Please keep us posted.

I have had him since he was a kitten.  The vet said he will do fine going back outdoors.  I have two people that aid they would adopt him.  There is a couple of problems.  One, he is definitely not house broken.  He will not go in the litter box that is in his cage.  He goes everywhere else.  Two, he is suppose to be quarantined for six months for rabies.  The vet isn't sure if he will contact rabies or not.  It all depends on what attacked him.  He did get a rabies vaccine when I took him in.

He has always been calm and always came to me and sits on my lap.  My dog and him are best buddies as they run around together.

We live in the country.  Not that many cars go up and down the roads.  I have four other feral cats.  The mom and her brood.  Nobody, knock on wood, has been hit.

Add leaves or dirt to the litter box for a few days.  It is what they are used to using and it may help him "get" the idea of what the box is for.  Leaving the door open is a good idea as he can decide if and when he wants to go.  Good luck with him.

He should be fine then if you've had him that long. I would doubt very much that he has rabies, that's usually a 'warm weather ' disease, very few animals carry it in the winter. You could call your Humane Society and see if there are any outbreaks in your area. The chances are very slim anyway. I wish you the very best with him, and once again THANK YOU for saving him and not taking the easy way out!
