Hi,

I grew up with cats my whole life and recently, my first cat passed away at 23 human years of age. I am now living in a city far from home and will have to for some time, so I got myself a kitten.

He's 10 weeks old, and growing so much and fast! I've never experienced a cat like him before: be comes if I call him, practically plays fetch, follows me everywhere, meows at me constantly, and will go anywhere I point my finger (even if I'm pointing at a place far away from myself).

His size has gotten to the point that I'm wondering what kind of breed he is? He's more of a dog than a cat!

This being said, I love him tons and he's a great joy to have around. I've considered getting him a companion because he lives in an apartment, and I think he needs more attention than I'm able to give. Attached are some pictures - do you have any idea what breed he may be?

He's 10 weeks old:

He's an adorable domestic shorthair who would probably appreciate having a friend to romp and snuggle with. What's his name?

Thanks!

In terms of getting him a friend - what are your thoughts about getting another boy, or a girl?

Alternatively, what toys can you reccomend to keep him occupied? I've got a ton of balls and a climbing pen, but he seems to prefer my attention more than anything else. While I'm home most of the day, I'm unfortunately doing homework/schoolwork most of the time so I don't get the chance to play with him directly for several hours per day.

Thanks!

We only have one cat, and our last cat was another "singleton" who also didn't like other cats, so I can't make any recommendations as to male or female. If your time is limited, another kitten as a playmate is really recommended.

Have you given him cardboard boxes and paper bags (without handles) to play in? Little mice to toss and pounce on? If the latter have plastic eyes/noses, you'll have to remove them so he doesn't swallow them. Cats really like interactive toys, for example fishing pole toys like DaBird, or wand toys (both of which have to be put away when not in use so your kitten doesn't strangle/hurt himself). They need to practice their hunting skills by chasing, pouncing on and catching their "prey". A lot of cats love chasing "red dot", i.e., a laser pointer, but you must be careful not to shine it in their eyes and to finish up the game with an actual toy they can catch to avoid frustration. You might find some tips in the Care & Grooming forum. There are several threads about toys: http://www.thecatsite.com/newsearch...eference=relevance&output=all&containingforum[0]=6&type=all&advanced=1
