8 weeks ago I had to put my beloved 10 year old kitty Cali to sleep due to an unknown but aggressive form of cancer.  Making the decision to end her suffering was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do and I've been quite sad about her loss the past couple of months.  I had no immediate intention of adopting a new cat as I had my hands full with my 4 remaining cats but it appears Fate had other plans.  Wednesday February 27th we received Cali's final necropsy results and officially learned that she had suffered from sarcoma of the stomach lining.  The report gave us a bit of closure and answered some of our unresolved questions.  It felt like the end of that horrible chapter of our lives.

A few hours later, while driving home from the grocery store, our headlights danced across some tiny, shining little eyes in the road.  My husband obviously knows I'm a bit of a crazy cat lady, so he stopped the car so I could check things out.  It was really dark but I could see a small shape wandering around and it started meowing at me.  It would come close, but not close enough, so I waved my husband away in case the idling car was the issue.  Once he was gone, I was able to lure the meowing little fluffball over to me, and I promptly snatched it into my arms and walked home.

I didn't get my first glimpse of the kitten until I stepped into our front entry way and my heart melted when I saw her adorable little face.  Long story short, my husband said I couldn't keep the kitten but I could tell he was immediately smitten as well. It felt like Kismet or Serendipity that she had found us (both names I have considered but the husband has rejected). He agreed that I could take her to the vet and make sure she was healthy before finding a new home for her (I knew the longer she stayed with us the more likely it would become permanent, but I didn't tell him that hehe).  The vet determined she was a 2.45 lb 9-10 week old Calico kitten in perfect health (minus the fleas and worms!).  She is very sure of herself, thinks all the big cats should want to be friends with her, purrs and plays nonstop, hisses at the dogs to make sure they know she is the boss, and she suckles on my hair when she's hungry or after she has just eaten.

For a tiny little thing, she has a whole lot of personality and wins people over wherever she goes.  She already comes running when I call "KIT-TEN" so I need to find a name ASAP before that sticks.  We prefer 2 syllable names and although I've come up with a long list, nothing seems to quite capture her energy, sweetness, spunkiness etc.

Help!

UGH she is just so stinking cute! I'm so sorry to hear about Callie's passing but it does seem to be fate that brought this little girl to you.

Picking the perfect name can be so challenging! I too used TCS when trying to name my Diego (that was the foster name I gave him and, even though I loved other names it just sort of stuck). She has such a girly face that she needs a pretty, feminine name.

You may get better tips if you give us more insight into what types of names you like for cats. Do you prefer more human names or more creative ones (like pumpkin or buttercup)? I'm guessing more human ones because of Callie but you never know. What are your other cats names?

If I had to pick one just by looking at her I would pick Evie. It's very girly and two syllables. It also pays homage to Callie with the "ie" ending. And, if you are religious you could draw the connection of fate back to Eve from the bible (that God took Callie but brought you Evie in her place). I am not super religious but I do love that symbolism!

Hopefully others will chime in with their suggestions but until then my vote is for Evie.

If you pick that name do I get a prize? Maybe a decoder ring out of a cereal box? That would be pretty sweet!

Congrats on the adorable new addition!

Mica

Mieke

Zara

Pia

Lyra

Grace

Hayley

Tell us what you end up choosing!

Wow, you guys are right on the money!  A lot of the names you suggested are either 1) Names of our current/previous pets (Chloe, Hope, Grace) 2) Names of people in our family (like my adorable niece Josie) 3) Names we've already got on our list.  Color me impressed!

To answer some of your questions, I think I tend to prefer more "human" names when it comes to my pets, but that doesn't mean they all have people oriented names.

1) Chase - grey cat, named after a character in my husband's favorite book series.

2) Cali - grey and white cat, sister to Chase.  Cali was a 'C' name that we could both agree on

3) Hope - big brown/black lab.  Named Hope because we "hoped" she would be a good dog some day (after being a naughty puppy).

4) Winnie - grey tabby.  Responds well to high pitched voices.  Also known as MiMi since it is her favorite sound.

5) Dalton - yellow foster dog that became permanent.  He came to us already named.

6) Doodle - orange/white kitty.  I was not allowed to name him since I wasn't supposed to keep him.  Started off as Patch for the white spot on his nose and it evolved from there.

7) Beigey - Doodle's brother and another cat I wasn't allowed to name/keep.  There were 3 red tabbys in that litter so he become known as Beigey due to his coloring.

Names of the strays I've taken in and rehomed: Charity, O'Henry, Chance, Lola (not named by me).  I like names that are virtues or descriptions of character or circumstance.

I've now got a gigantic list of names to chose from, a husband who seems to like the names I'm not particularly fond of, and a little fluffball that thinks her name is Kitten :p

Some of my husband's fav names:

Izzy

Hailey
Misty
Trixie
Brandy
Katie
Rory
Katniss

Emma

Pixie

Some of my fav names:

Maizy

Sadie

Kizmet

(Tiger) Lily

Moxy

Lexie

Evie

Kenzie

I might just end up randomly choosing since I can't seem to make up my mind!

I so understand what you are going thru about a loss of a loved cat...We had to put ours down about over a year ago and wasn't ready for another one just yet, but my brother was driving home one morning and the little thing darted in front of my brother, so my brother stopped and brought him home and has been with us ever since...he is just a domestic all black haired cat...We gave him the name of "Cecil"

Only one name that really came to mind by looking at that beautiful brown eyed fur bal (lol)....The name I thought of was "Ginger"

Figured the color of her fur and also accounting for the spunk !!!!   hehehe

Have a Great Day !!!!  :)

She is absolutely adorable!  I once brought in a stray and had him for 20 years.  After many loyal years of giving me love and affection, he died of old age this past summer.  When I brought him home in 1993 I didn't know what to name him so I called him "Bud" when he got into my plants and peed.  Very soon he became known to family and friends as "The Bud Cat", and that evolved to Buddy, Butters, and then one day Diggies... and how that came out, I'll never know.  From then on, Diggies was his intimate name and "The Bud Cat" was his formal name.  I'm a believer that the cat gives you its own name by telepathy.

More examples:  I had another stray cat, whose name I could not come up with until one day my husband picked her up and the name "Wheaties" came out of nowhere.  That's the name she wanted!  We also took in a kitten that somebody had easily named "Garfield" because he was orange... this name would not stick until somehow "Fielder's Choice" evolved, and soon it got shortened to "Field".  Can you imagine calling a cat by the name of "Field"?  Sounds stupid, but he loved it and it fit him perfectly!

The cat in my profile I formally named "King Footie" because of his white foot and because he is regal-looking. That's not the name he wanted, but it's his formal name...he eventually told me that he wants to be called "Pingers".  Other than telepathy, I can't tell you how stuff like this happens.

When I was a child, I had a cat I named "Cuddles"... that never stuck, but one day I called him Panther and that did stick.  He lived to be 21 years old.  Then there was Breezy who wanted to be "Beeezer", but that wasn't my cat.

And one more... a cat I conveniently named "Bunny" somehow told me she wanted to be called "Burrrrrr".  Go figure, but just know that if she tells you her name it means you have to keep her.

It's funny how cats seem to find us, whether we are ready for them or not.  When Cali was really sick, a less than compassionate coworker was quick to remind me that I could rescue tons of cats with the amount of money I was spending on vet visits for just one. At that time his comment was hurtful, but after Cali's passing I did consider the fact that I could help a needy cat with the money I had intended on spending for her chemo treatments.  Every time we went to a pet store I would browse the adoptable kitties looking for a special one that spoke to me in some way and it just didn't happen (nor did I probably honestly want it to).

There was just something so special about this kitten from the start.  She shook as she ate that first night, and she cuddled and purred and did her best to win us over.  Rather than waking in the morning with a sense of dread before tip toeing to Cali's room to see how much (or more accurately how little) she had eaten, I now jump out of bed and search out my sweet little friend.  Every time that I open the door she begins purring as she rushes to me and it is the best way to start my day.  Instead of forcing Cali to eat and worrying as I watch her waste away in front of me, I'm in awe of this little creature that can't eat enough and who is so obviously content once her belly has been filled.  And after a slew of bad/sad/frustrating/devastating vet appointments with Cali, there was nothing sweeter than having our wonderful vet ooh and ahh over this precious baby before declaring her perfect and healthy.  There is something so incredibly healing about having her in our home (and I can tell my husband feels it too).

Maybe that's part of the reason I'm trying so hard to find her the perfect name.  She has already done so much to make us happy and I am so grateful that she found me and I want to find a name that sums all of that up.  It's a tall order and I will probably just have to settle on a name that is good enough ;)

Ginger was on my list too but I couldn't decide if she was "gingery" enough hehe
