My precious kitty died suddenly yesterday.  He ate breakfast, walked into the family room, laid down and died.  It was literally within less than a minute.  I am struggling with not having put my finger into his throat to see if there was anything there, but he was not coughing, choking, anything.  He just took three breaths, his tongue fell out of the side of his mouth, and his eyes became fixed. He was completely normal just moments before.  My heart is breaking and I wonder if a hairball or anything could have caused his sudden and very quick death.  He was 8 years old, and strictly an indoor cat with current vaccinations.

This is so sad. Please don't blame yourself. Cats can have health issues just like people that cause them to die instantly. He might have had a heart problem or something else that you could not possibly have know of. I am sure your kitty knew how much he was loved. There is really no way to know without having the vet do a necropsy. Rest in peace sweet kitty. You will be sorely missed.

I'm so very sorry about your kitty.

Since we have also lost an 8 year old to sudden death I completely understand what you are going through and my heart goes out to you.

When our baby died we had a necropsy done at the university to make sure nothing was overlooked. (Our vet gave us a choice between the necropsy local vets could do and the far more complete necropsy the university would do.) The cause was found to be heart disease. (No signs of anything wrong ever, nothing to warn us that something was terribly wrong, even the day before.)

Hopefully this information will be helpful to you.

Sending you warm, comforting hugs.

My condolences - it must have been really shocking to lose him so unexpectedly and at a fairly young age. RIP, sweetie.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I know you are heartbroken and numb right now, please know there are others thinking of you and sending you prayers. It's human to think of all the things we could have/should have done, but there was NOTHING you could have done to prevent this. Your kitty knew a great love and died at home, please let this comfort you.  Rip precious kitty, wait for your family at the Rainbow Bridge!
